Description

' (Nan/Indem I H. lB. SCOVILLE.
MILK GAN.
N8. 248,808. Patented July 5, 1881.
' l TORNEYS N. mins. Mmnnsrwher. www n` c i UNITED' STATES PATENT (NEIGE.
HORACE B. SCOVILLE, OF CORTLAND, OHIO.
MILK-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,803, dated July 5, 1881.
Application led March 24, Y1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE B. ScovILLE, of Cortland, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans; and I do hereby declare that thefollowin gis afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a front view of my improved milk-can. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view, showing a modification; and Fig. 5 is a view of a box or cabinet containing several of my improved cans set in the ground.
Corresponding parts in the several gures are denoted by like letters 0f reference.
This invention relates to Creamery-cans for the transportation of milk, or in which it may be stored while the cream is rising; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction and arrangement of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the can or vessel, `which is provided at its upper edge with a bead, B which is nearly ^shaped in cross-section, as shown, and which may be formed by turning the edge of the can and llin g the groove thus formed with solder, or the said bead may be formed in any other suitable manner.
The front side of the can is provided with a glass, C, through which the contents may be seen, and upon which a scale or gage, D, is laid off to indicate the proportion or percentage of cream raised.
E is the cover of the can, which consists, by. preference, of a sheet or plate of metal, spun, pressed, or otherwise formed with an annular groove, F, A-shaped in cross-section to fit over the bead B at the upper edge of the can. By
this construction the cover may be made to fit so neatly and closely that splashing over of the milk is impossible.
By the modified construction of the cover shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the said cover consists of two plates or disks, G H,the former of which is provided with a circumferential rim, I, having an annular horizontally-projecting iiange, J, While the disk H, which is sol dered or otherwise secured in the cover Gr, as shown, is provided with an annular ^shaped groove, K, to t over the bead at the upper edge of the can.
The can A is provided, nearits upper edge and on diametrically opposite sides, With ears L L, in which the bail or handle M is hinged. Said handle is provided at the ends of its arms with cams N, placed eccentrically in relation to the hinges or pivots, so that when the bail or handle is turned to one side of the can they shall turn or point in -an upward direction, while when the position of the bail or handle is reversed they shall he pressed or forced down against the rim of cover E, or the annulariiange J of cover G H, as the case may be,
thus forcing such cover down and holding it securely in position.
To remove or adjust the cover it is only necessary to reverse the position of the bail or handle.
O is a box or cabinet, which may be made of any desired size to contain any desired number of my improved milk-cans. Said box or cabinet is to be sunk in the ground in any suitable positionwhere a sure and steady dow of water can be had through the said box and around the cans contained therein. By this arrangement a cheap and common box may be used without presenting an unsightly appearance, while the result is fully equal to that produced by the use of expensive cream erycabi nets.
From the foregoin g description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
The combination, with a milk can having a v In testimonyv that I claim lthe foregoing as hinged handle or bail provided at the ends of my own I have hereto afxed my signature its arms with eccentric Cams, of a cover proin presence of two Witnesses.
vided with an annular ange forming an an- HORACE B. SCOVILLE. 5 nular groove, F, tting over the bead B upon Witnesses:
the upper edge of the can7 as herein described, E. E. BARNES,
for the purpose set forth. AD. P. CAMP.
