NIIED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SERGIEJ ALEXANDROWITSOH MIJAMLIN, OF KIEW, RUSSIA.
APPARATUS FOR MELTING SNOW AND ICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 627,128, dated June 20, 1899.
Application filed December 20, 1 8 9 8- To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SERGIEJ ALEXANDRO- WITSCH MIJAMLIN, merchant, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, and a resident of No. 22 Kirilowskaja, Kiew, Russia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Melting Snow and Ice, of which the following is a full,- olear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an apparatus for melting snow and ice, so that the latter may be removed from the foot-path, road,or tram- Way track, such apparatus being made of steel or iron.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a general view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a view of the grate drum or cylinder, adapted for the reception of the fuel and for the supply of air necessary for combustion. Fig. 3 is a view of the yoke by means of which the cylinder is actuated.
A is a cast-iron cylinder or jacket which may be closed by two lids or covers B. The latter are provided with round openings for the supply of air. One of these lids may be rigidly mounted and the other made detachable. In the jacket A is inserted the grate drum or cylinder, whose central part Drepresents a perforated cylinder adapted for the supply of air for combustion. 011 the periphery of this cylinder there are provided six to eight wings E, adapted for the reception of the fuel. The lid closing or shutting ofi the inner cylinder D carries the rotating axle T, which passes through the cylinder and is provided with a screw-thread close to the lid. This grate-drum is passed into the cylinder A, the ends of the axle T engage through the central openings of the lids B B, and the nuts G G are screwed or otherwise secured on both ends of the axle, so that the grate-drum is integral with the cylinder A.
The entire space between the cylinders D and A is filled up with fuel (Wood, coal, wadding impregnatedwith petroleum or the like) and ignited. Then the yoke, provided with a wooden handle M, is secured to the cylinder in the following manner: The one part J of the yoke is placed over the one end of the sees to. 699,881. (No model.)
axle T, and the second part Y of the yoke is cry of the cylinder A, whose length somewhat exceeds the width of the track, such rings fitting into the recesses of the rails and adapted to melt thesnow located therein.
Having particularly described and ascer tained the nature of this invention, I declare that what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, an imperforate outer cylinder A, a perforated inner cylinder, the axle carried by the inner cylinder, means for spacing the cylinders apart and for providing a plurality of fuel-compartments, said means comprising the radial wings E extendingfrom all sides of the inner cylinder and perforated, and draft-openings in the cylinders for the air, substantially as described.
2. In combination, an imperforate outer cylinder A,- a perforated inner cylinder, the axle carried by the inner cylinder, means for spacing the cylinders apart and for providing a plurality of fuel-compartments, said means comprising the radial wings E extending from all sides of the inner cylinder and perforated, draft-openings in the cylinders for the air and a handle comprising the divided yoke the sections of which are removable from the ends of the axle to permit separation and opening of the implement, and a sleeve for holding the parts of the yoke together, one part hav ing the handle extension formed therewith, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
