[NVENTUR E mma. E Bi: 2. 73 J ya 4,4,

EMMA E. RICE, OF ZUMBROTA, MINNESOTA.
DUST-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,096, dated May-30, 1899.
Application filed March 15, 1897- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMMA E. RICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zumbrota, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in dust-pans; and the object of the same is to provide an improved construction of du st-pan which is very simple and durable and which may be used without bending downward, to manipulate the same to remove the dust and dirt from the floor.
The invention further consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the drawings, of which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my dustpan. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the pan. Fig. 3 is a view of the blank out of which the pan is formed.
Referring to Fig. 3, 1 indicates the main bottom of the pan, having sides 2, which are bent upon the inclined lines 3 to form side walls, which incline from a point near the rear end of the bottom to the front end of the same. Thus a receptacle is formed which is narrower at its rearthan at its front end and the side walls of which are inclined from rear to front. Formed integral with the front edge of the bottom 1 is a second or false bottom 3, which is adapted to be bent backward and secured within the body of the dust-pan. The rear edge of this false bottom is elevated, which makes it inclined from the rear to the front edge of the pan.
Formed integral with the rear edge of the main bottom of the pan is the back 4, which is bent at right angles to the bottom and to which the sides and edge of the false bottom are secured. A strip 5 is formed integral with the upper edge of the back wall of the pan and is bentforward and secured upon the upper edges of the sides, said edges being inclined rearward, as illustrated.
Abrace or socket 6 is secured upon the outer $erial No. 627,509. (No model.)
side .of the back wall, in which the handle 7 is secured. This handle 7 extends substantially vertical to the bottom, so that it is not necessary for a person to stoop down in order to rest the pan fiat upon the floor.
The flat bottom of the pan, together with the rounded edge where the false bottom joins the front edge of the main bottom, greatly facilitates the removing of dirt from the floor or other object, as the same maybe very readily swept upon the inclined false bottom and into the pan. The hood prevents the dust and dirt from flying out of the pan when the same is being swept therein, as will be understood.
A dust-pan constructed in accordance with my invention is very durable, as the false bottom strengthens the bottom of the pan and prevents the same from bending and breaking. In fact, the whole construction is extremely simple and effective in its operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, a dust-pan made in one piece from a-single sheet of metal and comprising a bottom having upwardly-- extending and rearwardly-converging sides, a back extending substantially at a right angle to the bottom and forming a continuation of the bottom, a hood or guard forming acontinuation of the back and extending forward and inclining upwardly and united to the top edges of the sides, a false bottom forming a continuation of the front edge of the bottom and bent backward at an inclination to the bottom, said false bottom extending backward and having its entire rear edge in contact with the back of the pan and its side edges in contact with the sides of the pan, and an upwardly-extending socket for a handle disposed perpendicularly to the bottom of the pan and united to the rear wall thereof, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMMA E. RICE.
