DUST-PAN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,455, dated February 28, 1893. Application filed May 24, 1892. Serial No. 434,187. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL K. BARNHART, a citizen of the United States, residingat Gaines, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in dust-pans and it has for its object among others to provide an improved dust-pan by which the dirt can be easily collected and which will prevent the broom from coming in contact With the dirt after it is swept into the dust-pan and which will remove the dirt from the broom as the same is being swept into the pan. I provide fins at the corners to keep the dirt from slipping over the corner. The dust pan is provided with a central verticalhandle by which it may be used While in a standing position.

Other objects and advantages of theinvention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved dust-pan. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section through the same.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the dust-pan which is formed of preferably sheet metal in the form of a rectangular receptacle the sides of which may be of any desired height and from the upper ends of the said sides there extends upon each side an inclined flange or apron B the lower edge of which is designed to rest upon the floor as shown. A suitable handle 0 is suitably secured to the dust-pan, preferably at its center and extending vertically as shown; it may be of any desired length but preferably of such a length that the pan can be conveniently operated without stooping.

At each corner at the angle I provide a fin a which serves to prevent the dirt as it is being swept up one of the inclined sides from falling over onto the next adjacent inclined side and from thence back onto the floor as will be readily understood.

Suitably supported around the edges of the receptacle within the walls or sides thereof is a guard D preferably of Wire in order that it may be as light as possible, the guard shown being a rectangular one held at the corners by the inclined Wires or rods E held at their lower ends within the pan A and their upper ends formed with loops or eyes in which the guard is held as shown in both views. This guard serves to strengthen the pan, prevents the broom from coming in contact with the dirt after it has been once swept into the receptacle and also serves to clean off the broom as the latter comes in contact therewith.

The device is simple, cheap of manufacture and in practice has proved most efficient for the purposes for which it is intended. Its usefulness and advantages will be appreciated by those having occasion to use such articles.

What I claim as new is- 1. The dust-pan described consisting of a body portion, inclined flanges from the sides thereof, fins at the angles at the junction of the said flanges, a central vertical handle, and a guard within the body parallel with the inner edges of the flanges and between the same and the center of the body, as set forth.

2. The dust-pan described consisting of the rectangular body portion with central vertical handle, and inclined aprons at the four sides, a fin at each corner on the said aprons, inwardly-inclined rods from the corners of the body portion, and a guard supported in said I rods parallel with the edges of the body portion and between the aprons and the center of the said body portion, substantially as shown and specified.
