Description

gutter! tetra gaunt {firm W. F, G. BEEUWKES, 0F HOLLAND, MICHIGAN. Letters Patent No. 61,387, dated Junta, 22, 1867 IMPROVEMENT IN GOWLS.
dLIge fitlgetule marsh tutu time fiettcts 35mm tut mating gait if the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. F. G. BEEUWKES, of Holland, in the county of Ottawa, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Chimney Top or'Cap; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,-
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification.
The present invention relates to a new and improved top or cap for chimneys of dwelling-houses, and other buildings, the principal object being to prevent the roof of. the building, through which thechimney extends, from becoming heated by the action of the heated currents of air 'and products of combustion passing through the chimney, the importance of which is obvious to all. I
In accompanying plate of drawings my improved chimney top or cap is illustrated, the figure being a central vertical section through the samefishowing the chimney or escape pipe and a portion of the roof of a building.
A in the drawings represents a portion of the roof of a building, having my improved chimney top or cap applied to it; B the chimney or escape pipe passing up through the roof, but surrounded at such portion of its length as passes through the roof by a concentric cylindrical casing, G, placed at a short distance therefrom,
and secured at its lower end to it by brackets, D, at suitable points, and at its upperend similarly attached to the inside of anotherand outer but somewhat larger concentric casing or cylinder, F, fastened at its lower end to and around the opening G in the roof; which exterior casing F extends upwards nearly to the top of the chimney, with a covering or plate, H, over the spacer, between it and the chimney, this plateprojecting beyond.
the casing F, with a short casing, J, attached to its under side, learing a space or chamber, K, between it and the exterior casing F. L a cap-plate placed over the upper endof the chimney B, at a short distance therefrom. M M a series of openings formed in the outer cylindrical casing F, at or near its upper end, but above the end of the short casing J, placed around the'outside of the same at such end.
From the above-described arrangement and construction of my improved chimney top, it is plain to be seen that, by surrounding the portion ofthe chimney passing through the roof with the casing 'no heating of the roof from the action of the products'of combustion escaping through the chimney can possibly occur, thus preventing it from taking fire, while all heated air generated from the radiation of heat by the chimney is free to escape from the chamber surrounding it through the apertures M, in the upper portion of the-exterior casing 13, the cap-plate to the chimney and the cover to the casing F preventing snow or rain from entering the same.
I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of theguard pipes or casings G and F, plate H, and short cylinder J for protecting the roof from the heat'of the chimney, substantially as herein shown and described. 7 i
W. F. G. BEEUWKES.
