Description

Patented 0m. 30, 187?.
I. D. PEOK. Sectional Chimneys.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ISAAC D. BECK, OF BEDFORD," IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO EDWIN HOUCK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SECTIONAL CHIMNEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,698, dated October 30, 1877; application filed September 4, 1877.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC D. BECK, of Bedford, Taylor county, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Proof Chimneys, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which the figure represents a vertical section of my improved chimney.
This invention relates 'to improvements in fire-proof chimneys and ventilators for buildings; and the invention consists in the general construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A A represent two sections of a chimney or flue secured together by hooks and eyes a a. Surroimding said chimney are two series of sectional casings or pipes, B B G G, one arranged within the other, forming thereby two air-chambers, D E, which render the chimney or flue perfectly safe. These two chambers are ventilated at the top by means of a series of air-tubes, b b, inserted through the plate F of the pipes or casings, and the outside pipe or casing is provided with valves 0 c, and the inside pipe or casing is provided with openings 0 e in its bottom plate, asis clearly shown in the drawmg.
The chimney or flue .is provided with the usual cap or plate 01, and the air-tubes b b are also covered by a cap or plate, f.
Surrounding'the top of the outside casing or pipe is a corrugated metal plate, G, which strengthens said casing, and at the same time allows the water collected on the top plate f to be discharged.
H is a protecting plate or shield surrounding the outside casing or pipe, which is arranged to fit over the top or peak of the roof of a house.
The sections B B C O are secured together by hooks and eyes, in the same manner as the sections of the flue or chimney.
The object of making the casings or pipes and the chimney or flue in sections is to facilitate putting up and removing them when desired.
By means of the valves and air-tubes the rooms of the house can be readily and easily ventilated without opening the windows, thereby avoiding cold drafts of air through the room.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the casings B O, the sections of which are secured together by hooks and eyes, and provided with the airtubes b and valve-openings c, with the flues A A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the sectional chimney or flue AA, sectional surrounding casings or pipes B B G 0, having valves 0 c, openings 0 e, and air-tubes b b, plate f, corrugated metal plate G, and protecting plate or shield H, substantially as herein shown and described.
