IIOW'ARD K. FOLLANSBEE, OF WELLINGTON, OHIO.
PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,134, dated October 25, 1898.
Application filed August 6, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD K. FOLLANS- BEE, of \Vellington, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to holders for cigars, pens, pencils, &c.; and its object is to provide a new and improved protector more especially designed for usein an ordinary vestpocket to keep the walls thereof spread apart for conveniently storing and protecting cigars and other articles, the device when closed forming a casing for containing a single cigar or other article.
The invention consists principally of two oppositely-arranged members and a folding device for connecting the said members with each other to close the same and form a casing or to hold the said members spread apart.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement as extended. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same as closed to form a casing. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the improvement in an open position, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of the improvement.
The improved protector illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is provided with two oppositelyarranged members A A, preferably in the form of half-casings, made U shape in crosssection and pointed at their lower ends to permit of readily inserting the device in a vestpocket or the like. The member A is pivotally connected at one of its side flanges with links B B, and similar links B B eX- tend from the corresponding flange of the other member, and the sets of linksB B and 3' B are pivotally connected with each other and with a vertically-disposed rod 0, adapted to be taken hold of by the operator to extend the sets of links, as shown in Fig. 1, or to move the same into a closed position, as illus- Serial No. 647,344. (No model.)
trat-ed'in Fig. 2, to bring the two members A A into a closed position to form a casing of which the lower end is closed and the upper end is open for the insertion of asingle cigar or other article.
Now it will be seen that when the device is in an open position, as shown in Fig. 1, the device may be readily inserted into a vest or other pocket, so as to hold the walls thereof spread apart to permit of inserting a number of cigars in the said pocket between the members A A to protect the cigars against injury from the walls of the pocket.
It is understood that the sets of links B B and B B on the bar or rod O form an open ing or closing device for the members A A, so that the latter can be readily spread apart, as shown in Fig. l, for the purpose mentioned, or closed for forming a casing of the two members, as previously explained.
A piece of rubber D is stretched from one member to the other, near the upper end thereof, so as to conveniently hold smaller articles-such as lead-pencils, fountain-pens, and the likesecurely in place in the pocket in which the device is used.
As shown in Fig. 4, the links 13- 13 for the member A are pivotally connected with the said member between the outer flange A and a false flange A so that the two links readily fold between the two flanges when the members are in a closed position.
The device is very simple and durable in construction, is not liable to injure a pocket, can be readily opened or extended, and moved into a closed position to form -a casing, as previously explained.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A protector, comprising oppositely-a1" ranged members in the form of halfcasings and a folding device for connecting the said members with each other, consisting of sets of links, the two links of each set being each pivoted by one end to opposite halves of the casing and by their other ends to each other, and a link pivoted to the central pivot of each set, whereby the halves of the casings remain parallel and may approach or recede from each other.
2. A protector, comprising two bars of U- shaped cross-section having one end pointed, a folding device for connecting said bars with each other, consisting of sets of links, the two links of each set being each pivoted by one end to opposite halves of the casing and by their other ends to each other, and a link pivoted to the central pivot of each set, whereby the halves of the casing remain parallel and may approach or recede from each other.
3. A protector, comprising two halficasings each of trough-shaped cross-section having their hollow sides toward each other, links arranged in plural pairs, the links of each pair being pivoted at one end to the side or edge of opposite half-casings and by their other ends to each other, and a rod pivoted HOWARD K. FOLLANSBEE.
