SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,881, dated October 4, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that l, HENRY WI'RTH,-a citizen of the United States, residing at Maiden, in the county of Fergus and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a novel button designed particularly for use upon' articles of apparel or as a collar-button, the object being to provide a button of this character provided with a detachable base or look which may be removed to enable the shank to be readily passed through the buttonhole and which may be quickly secured to the extremity of the shank to retain the button against casual displacement.

The invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts,which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my button complete. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the head and shank, and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the lock.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the button-head, of any suitable or desired form, provided with a split or bifurcated shank 2, the bifurcations of which are resilient and are normally spread or sprung slightly apart. The extremities of the parts 3 are pointed, as indicated at 4, to permit of the ready connection of the two parts of the button, and notches or recesses 5 are formed in their outer faces at the bases of the points, the bifurcations of the shank adjacent to the head being slightly bulged or enlarged to prevent the cloth from interfering with the closing of the button, as explained below.

6 indicates the base or look, which is prefably hollow, as shown, and is composed of a dish-shaped plate 7 and a flat base-plate 8, peripherally secured thereto.

9 indicates a slot in the plate 8, which extends from the outer edge of said plate inwardly and terminates in a central rectangular opening 10. The said slot is of a width which will just permit of the passage of the shank 2 therethrough when the bifurcations of the latter are compressed. The plate 7 is also provided with a slot 11 to enable the shank 2 to enter the slot 9 laterally.

From the foregoin g description it is believed that the manner of connecting and disconnecting the two parts of my button will be readily understood. Briefly stated, however, it is as follows: With the two parts separated the shank 2 is first inserted through the buttonhole until it passes the bulged or enlarged portion thereof, when the base or look 6 is applied in one of two waysthat is, the shank 2 may be forced to enter longitudinally the rectangular opening 10, in which case the beveled edges of the two members of the bifurcated shank will ride upon the beveled edges of the opening 10 until the .notches 5 are reached, when by reason of the resiliency of said members the same will be urged outwardly and the edges of the opening 10 will fit within said notches. If desired, however, the base or look 6 may be applied laterally by inserting the shank 2 into the outer end of the slot 9 and moving the base or look in a direction at right angles to said shank. In so doing the shank members will be contracted and finally seated within the rectangular opening 10 at the center of the base.

The button thus constructed may be readily inserted in the garment and when in place' will be effectually secured against displacement; but while the construction of my device appears at this time to be preferable, I do not desire to limit myself to the structural details set out, but reserve the right to change, modify, or vary them at will within the scope of my invention.

What I claim is- 1. In a button, the combination with a shank com-posed of a pair of resilient members terminally pointed and provided with oppositely-disposed notches, of a hollow base provided with an aperture designed for the reception of the shank, substantially as specified. V
