son, in the county of Madison and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Im provements in Button-Snaps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening devices for garments, particularly to buttons, and has for its object the provision of a structure whereby a button may be secured upon a garment without the employment of needle or thread while at the same time the button will be strongly held so as to withstand the ordinary strains.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which may be used in connection with any button having two or more holes therein provided for the passage of thread.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which may be very readily engaged or disengaged and which will consequently be advantageous and a labor saver in use, it being noted that the device being simple it may be manufactured at little cost.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional view through a por tion of a garment showing my button structure associated therewith in side elevation.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a portion of a garment or other article upon which it is desired to mount buttons, and B designates a button which may have only two or four holes commonly provided for the passage of the thread used in sewing the button in place.
My invention resides in the provision of means for securing such an ordinary button in place without sewing. In carrying out my invention I provide a wire member 10 formed at -its ends with enlarged semipear shaped portions forming a head 11 having a retaining shoulder 12. This wire member is bent and rebent upon itself intermediate its ends, as shown at 13, so as to be engaged within two opposite ones of the holes in the button.
Disposed beneath the underside of the cloth upon which the button is to be secured, is a base member formed of a cup-like lower portion 14 and and a disk-like top portion 15, provided with round hole 16 for the passage of the head 11. Disposed within the space between the members ll and 15, is a spring 17 which has its arms crossed and recrossed, as shown, to provide a loop 18, adapted for encircling engagement with the wire member 10 beneath the shoulder 12 of the head. It will be observed that a portion of this spring projects through an opening 19 in one side of the cup portion 1 1 of the base member so that the operator may press his thumb nail against this projecting portion of the spring and thus move the spring so as to expand the loop 18 to permit withdrawal of the wire member carried by the button.
In order to secure a button upon a garment by means of my device, it is first necessary that the wire member 10 be properly engaged within the holes in the button. The head of the wire member is then passed through the fabric and, if desired, an apertured metal plate may be disposed against the fabric at the point where the head passes through. The head is then inserted through the hole 16 and through the loop 18 in the spring 17 and it will be observed that as the head passes through the loop, the loop will be expanded and will then contract or snap into engagement with the wire member beneath the shoulder of the head, the head also expanding.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a slightly modiiied form of wire member. In this form I provide the rebent outer portion 20 with a pair of opposite arms 21 which are adapted to overlie the other two holes in the button when my device is used in connection with a button having four holes therein.
In the remaining figures I have shown a somewhat modified form of base member in which use is made of a button-like portion 22 which has associated therewith spring grips 23 engageable with the head 11. In
this construction, when the button-like member 22 is moved outwardly away from the remainder of the base, the jaws will be separated so as to permit withdrawal of the wire member and consequently removal of the button. I
While I have shown and, described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement. of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
