COMBINED SCISSORS AND KNIFE SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 6 11,369, dated September 27, 1898. Application filed February 28, 1894. Serial No. 501,841, (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, J AMES S. SHAFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuttletown, in the county of Tuolumne and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Scissors or Shears and Knife Sharpener; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combined scissors or shears and knife sharpeners, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective device of the character stated wherein the sharpening operation of either a knife or scissors or shears can be readily and quickly accomplished.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a perspective view of the improved combined sharpener.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a base-plate, on which is supported a spring 2. From the said spring rise arms 3, having upward-divergent ends 4 to form an opening of substantial V shape, as at 5, wherein a knife may be sharpened. The upper ends of the arms are provided with notches 6 to fit the shear or scissor blades and by means of which said blades may be sharpened in a quick and ready manner. Both of the upper ends of the arms are similar in construction, except that the notches 6 are arranged in opposite edges, and in sharpening the scissor or shear blades they are adapted to engage either one orboth of said notches, it being understood that when both notches are employed one scissor or shear blade will be sharpened in one notch and the other blade in the opposite notch. The pressure brought to bear on the arms and the upper portion of the device is taken up by the spring 2, which will yield, as will be seen.
In sharpening a knife the blade of the same is placed in the V-shaped opening between the arms and drawn therethrough, it being seen that the opposite edges of the arms bear upon opposite sides of the knife-blade at its edge and gradually remove the metal to sharpen the same.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- As an improved article of manufacture, a scissor or shear and knife blade sharpener comprising a lower base-plate on which a spring is mounted, having upwardly-extending arms which are so bent as to form a V- JAMES S. SHAFFER.
