BLADE-SHARPENING DEVICE.
pecification of Letters Patent. I Pafe il tfl Jllly 9,
I Application filed. July 1, 1916. Serial No. 107,172
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, Bnn'r A. SEEKING, a citizen of the United States, residing in Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blade-Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to blade sharpening devices in which the blade to be sharpened is guided to contact with the sharpening steel or stone so as to grind away the blade evenly and form a straight cutting edge at a right angle, or at any desired angle to the sides of the blade; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide means of grinding a uniform face to a sharpened edge of a blade, and, second, to provide such means to sharpen a blade with one beveled side, or two beveled sides to the sharpened edge, and at the same time provide means for sharpening two opposite edges uniformly by grinding off between them.
I attain these objects by means of the mechanisms illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention properly assembled and ready to be used to sharpen a blade with one beveled edge, or two opposite beveled edges to the sharpened edge, or to sharpen two opposite edges uniformly when the bevel clip having beveled side 10 is removed.
Fig. 2 is an end view showing method of applying my invention to grind a blade with one beveled edge to the sharpened edge. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing its adaptation to sharpen two opposite edges by grinding off the surface between them, and Fig. l is an end view showing how two beveled edges may be formed to the cutting edge of the blade.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views. My invention is composed of three parts, as follows: a carrying frame having a side 1 which stands at a right angle to the bottom 2 from which side 5 rises at the same angle and carries beveled piece 4, which servesthe double purpose of providing a holder for stone, or steel, 6 and a spacer to hold the blade 11", Fig. 4, to grind a bevel at its cutting edge. The upturned clips 3 at each end of bottom 2 hold stone or steel 6 from slipping out endwise when a blade is pressed against it and drawn backward and forward in grinding.
The removable bevel clip carried by side 1 i -of the frame, Figs. land 2, has side 10 slanting at a predetermined angle toward stone 6 to properly guide a blade to have one bevel to its sharpened edge, and is formed of fiat spring steel bent at 7 and 8 to engage side 1, and at 9 to form the side 10 against which the blade 11, Fig. 2, is held to form a single bevel to the cutting edge of the blade. This clip is removed when two opposite edges are to, be sharpened as in sharpening an ice skate runner 11, and is not needed to form two beveled edges on 11 Fig. 4.
To sharpen, or grind, ice skates, scissors, knife blades and the like the article to be sharpened is held fast and my invention applied in the position to form the predetermined bevel desired and drawn back and forth until a cutting edge is formed by the stone or steel 6.
It is obvious that by means of my removable bevel clip that the side 10 may be formed to provide any desired bevel by predetermining what bevel the blade should have and employing a bevel clip having the slant of side 10 desired. Hence by the use of many bevel clips with varying sides 10, many kinds of bevels may be made. It may also be seen that stone 6 may be easily removed and replaced to bring a new grinding surface in position to make full use of the stone.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described,
carrying frame comprising a bottom member and two side members at right angles thereto, the one of said side members being plain and relatively high and the other being shorter and having a downwardly beveled inner extremity, and a sharpening device resting on said bottom 'and held between said side members.
2. In a device of the character described, a carrying frame comprising a bottom memher and two side members at right angles thereto, the one of said side members being plain and relatively high and the other being shorter and having a downwardly beveled inner extremity, a sharpening device resting on said bottom and held between said side members, and a bevel clip removably held on said plain side member.
3. In a device of the character described, a carrying frame comprising a bottom member and two side members at right angles thereto, the one of said side membe l s being Intestimony whereof I hereunto afiix m plain and relatively high, a sharpening designature in the presence of two Witnesses.
vice restin on said bottom and held between said side 11%6Iflb61s, means for removably re 7 BERT 'SEBRING' 5 taining said sharpening device in position, Witnesses:
and a bevel clip remevably held on said 7 G O. L. WALKER,
plain sidemember. "K. E. PARKER.
