LIVERAS HULL, OF c GHARLESTOl/VN, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 61,070, dated January 8, 18,57.

TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, LIvEnAs HULL, of Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improved Whip Stock and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specication, andrepresented in the accompanying drawings, of whichv Figure l is a side view'of a whip stock as `it appears after it is turned down or completed ready for being smoothed preparatory to being covered.
Figure 2 is a side view of the stock preparatory to being turned or reduced.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectin of it.
Figure 4 is a transverse section of it near its but or larger end.
Figure 5 is a transverse section of it at its middle.
In making this whip stock I take a long shaft or strip of Whalebone, a, for the heart-piece, it being to extend beyond the fasccs of rattan employed to encompass it. The said strip, a, I usually make square or polygonal in section. In fact, it should be as near a regular polygon in section as possible. To. each Vof the faces or sides of the taperingv heart-piece a, I apply and glue a long strip, b, oi' rattan of a greater width than thatof that side of the heart-piece o n which it is to be fixed, thc arrangement of the strip or rattan being so as to cause it to project beyond the face of the heart-piece in the plane thereof, and lap in such plane on the edge of the next adjacent 'istrip of rattan. The two strips of rattan, where they lie against one another, are also to be glued together. This arrangement of the rattan and the hcartpiece is particularly shown in figs. 4 and 5. When the rattan strip is not wide enough to complete the stock near its but, I apply and glue between and to the strips enlargement pieces or strips, c c c c, of rattan so as to ll the recesses Aor angular spaces between thec'ontiguous strips. When necessary there may be placed in the but or handle part of the stock a handle heart-piece separate from and so as to extend from the whalebone heart-piece a,'such being polygonal in section, and being composed of metal or other suitable material, and added prior to the application of the rattan strips. To all the surfaces in contact I apply glue and set them firmly together by tightly winding a rope or cord about them, in vertical coils. The whalebone, by extending through the rest of the whip, serves to prevent breakage of it, and to impart to it the necessary amount of elasticity. After the stock may have thus been made, and the glue become set or hard, the rope should be removed, and the wooden part of the stock should be turned or reduced to a conic frustum, which may be accomplished. by a machine for which I'haveapplied for Letters Patent, the final finishing or reduction of the whole stock to a proper taper and shape being effected by a machine recently patented by me, and described in Letters Patent No. 53,003. I am aware that it is not new to make a whip stock of whalebone, and therefore I no not claim such as my invention. i Nor do I claim a Whip stock made of a Whalcbone heart-piece, and sundry strips of rattan applied to its sides, and having their joints arranged like those of the voussoirs of an arch, the strips and heart-piece being connected by pitch, and subsequently reduced to a proper shape by a plane. In my arrangement it will be seen that each of the strips b of rattan has its joint with the next strip arranged in the plane of' that face of the heart-piece to which the former strip is applied. In consequence of such improved arrangement of the strips 6 b of rattan with respect to each other and the heart-piece a, the collection of them will be held together by the glue, and can be turned to better advantage than is the case when their joints are arranged like the voussoirs of an arch. Besides this, they can be fitted together better, and there is much less danger ot` slivering at the joints under the action of the turning tool.
I claim as my invention, the improved Whip sto'cl,nade substantially as described,` viz, with cach oi' its rattan strips b having its joint with the nextstrip arranged in the plane of that face of the heart-piece to which the former strip may be applied, the strips and heart-piece being glued together and subsequently turned into shape as set forth.
LIVERAS HULL.
