UNIED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ADAM HESS, OF MAQUOKETA, IOWA.
TRACE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,176, dated February '7, 1899.
Application filed April 4, 1898- Serial No. 676;106- (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ADAM HESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maquoketa, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trace-Holders, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to trace-holders for whiffletrees; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same by which a trace can be securely held to a whiflletree without liability of becoming accidentally disengaged.
The invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a whifltletree, of a holder consisting of a single piece of wire bent at or near the center to form a loop, through which a trace may pass, and then twisted to form a shank, and one of the ends passed through a hole in the whiflietree and bent into a book, which engages with a similar hook on the other end, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a whiffletree with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is 'a similar view of the holder detached.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a whiflletree provided with a hook 2, which may be of any ordinary or suitable construction, with which the trace 3 is connected.
The numeral 4 designates the holder, consisting of a single piece of wire bent at or near its center, formin g a loop 5,through which the trace passes. Said wire is then twisted to form a shank 6, the twisting of the wire strengthening the same and giving it the necessary rigidity to withstand the strain to which it is subjected. One end of said wire is bent at a right angle and passed through a hole in the whiffietree and the extremity formed with a hook or eye 7, which engages with a corresponding hook or eye 8 at the other end of the holder. By this means the holder is pivotally connected with the whiffietreei In use the trace is passed through the loop of the holder and connected with the whiflietree-hook. The holder will securely hold the trace on the hook without liability of accidental disengagement, and being pivotally connected with the whiffletree will yield to the movement of the trace.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is-= The combination with a whiffletree, of the nesses.
