DRAFT-EQUALIZER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,694, dated June 14, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIAN DUPERRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Provemont, in the county of Leelanau and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in draft-equalizers; and its object is to provide a simple, compact, and durable device of this character which is especially adapted for use in plowing or harrowing orchards.

The invention consists in providing an equalizer which is formed in a single strip of metal so bent as to overcome the formation of sharp corners or other projections which are liable to contact with and tear bark from trees during the plowing or harrowing operation.

The invention also consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts,-

opposite sides of a centrally-located loop oreye 2, and these arms terminate in hooks 3, adapted to engage swingletrees. Rods 4 extend inwardly from the hooks, and the ends thereof abut and are inclosed by a sleeve 5,

which serves to hold them against displacement. This sleeve may be secured to one of the rods 4 or can be detachably fastened in any suitable manner upon both of the rods. The hooks 3 serve to engage loops or eyes 6, arranged between oppositely:extending inclined arms 7, which are similar to the arms 1 and terminate in eyes 8. Rods 9 extend inwardly from the eyes 8, and the ends thereof abut and are inclosed by a sleeve 10, similar to the sleeve 5, hereinbefore referred to. A hook 11 is adapted to be placed in engagement with the eye 2 and is employed for attaching the whiffletree to a load, while the draft-animals are connected to the swingletrees in any ordinary manner. As there are no projecting corners to the draft-equalizer, it is obvious that should the same be accidentally drawn into contact With a tree it would not ,parts as above stated I am enabled to produce hooks 3. The single free portions of the metal are extended inwardly from said hooks toward each other in a straight line the terminal ends of which abut one against the other, and said ends are secured together by a tubular sleeve which wholly incloses the same. By means of the bends in constructing the hooks greater strength is given to the whiflietree when strain is brought to bear on the same when a pull on the swingletrees is made.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A draft-equalizer comprising a whifiietree constructed of a single piece of suitable metal having oppositely-arranged inclined arms provided with an eye at their central portions, said arms at their terminal ends being bent double so as to bring the single piece of metal together, side by side, whereby to form hooks, the single free ends of the metal at the intersection of the hooks being extended inwardly in a straight line toward each other so that their terminal ends will abut one against the other and a tubular sleeve for wholly surrounding the said ends and rigidly securing them together, substantially as specified.
