Be it known that I, SARAH E. COOK, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut,haveinvented certain newand useful Improvements in a Combined Abdominal Supporter, Truss, and Obesity-Bandage; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention is designed to provide an abdominal supporter'which is not only admirably adapted for the purposes of an appliance of that character and as an obesity-bandage, but which is also adapted for use with good effect as a truss in the treatment and reduction of umbilical hernia and in cases of rupture and also as a uterine support. It isalso designed to provide an appliance of this nature which is capable of being closely and perfectly fitted to the wearer and in a manner to retain itself in place without wrinkling and without the use of auxiliary brace or strap connections, while at the same time it may be worn with the greatest ease and comfort, being free to the proper extent to adjust itself to the waist movements of the body of the wearer without destroying its efficiency as a support.

With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved abdominal supporter and truss. Fig. 2 is a section on the line mm, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the supporter as applied. Fig. 5 is a view showing a modified form of the support.

In the drawings the letter A designates the front section of the supporter or support proper, which is of the proper form and size to cover the abdomen and which is formed with a number of vertically-extending slips or pockets a, in which are inserted whalebones B or other suitable stiffening-strips.

the outside of the fabric forming the bodyof the support, so that the inner side of such fabric presents a smooth close-fitting surface. The strips or bones at the lateral portions of the support extend the full length of the support from its upper to its lower edges, while the central and intermediate strips terminate at their upper ends at points ashort distance above'the navel-line. This arrangement permits the support to more readily yield to the waist movements of the body, while it gives the lower portion more firmness or rigidity and provides a more efficient support at the point where it is most required and also prevents largely the tendency of the support to upward movement. The bones or stiffeningstrips generally give form to the support and enable it to be perfectly fitted to the body in the nature of a corset-fitting.

C C designate the back or' side sections of the supporter, which are fitted one upon each side above the hips and over the loins and are connected with each other by means of two parallel elastic straps D, which extend across the small of the back. These sections C C are also formed with vertically-extending stiffening-strips or bones, whereby they are given form and may be accurately and perfectly fitted in place. Connected to the forward edge portions of said sections are straps E, usually three in number, which extend around and are adapted to be connected to buckles F or other suitable fastening devices which are secured to the lateral portions of the section A. Formed on the inner central portion of said section A is a pocket H, which is open at the top and is of the proper form and .size to receive atruss-pad K. The upper edge of said pocketis preferably formed by a piece L of elastic webbing, which will yield to the insertion of the pad and tends to hold the same in place and which will lie flat upon the inner surface of the supportwhen the pad is removed.

In case of rupture in the groin I provide the support A with a lower triangular corner extension L, which is designed to extend down over the groin and which is provided on its inner face with a pocket M, which is designed to receive a pad N and which is similar to the pocket H above described. Connected to the Said pockets or slips are formed entirely upon extension L is a strap P, preferably of elastic material, and which is adapted to be passed between the thighs and up oxer the hip, having a tab 1), which is designed to be connected to a buckle O or other suitable fastening on a tab 0', attached to one of the side straps E. This extension L, with its fastening-strap and pad-pocket, may be applied to either corner of the support, as the case requires, and when not needed may be omitted entirely.

For use as a uterine support the part A is made with a central downward extension, as shown in Fig. 5, which is provided with a pocket S, such as above described, and designed to receive a suitable supporting-pad S.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described abdominal support, comprising the fitted front section having the flexible vertically-extendin g sti lfeningstraps, the two fitted back and side sections, the clastic parallel back straps Which connect the said sections, the two sets of fastening-straps and the corner extension of said front section provided on its inner side with an open pad-receivin g pocket, together with a strap attached to said extension and means whereby the free end portion thereof after being passed between the thighs may be connected to one of said fastening-straps, substantially as specified.
