WINDOW-WASHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,581, dated May 3, 1898.

Be it known that I, SARAHURMSTON, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Washers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the sanie.

This invention relates to combination implements for Washing Windows.

The object of the invention is to provide in a single instrument all of the necessary or desirable devices required for scrubbing, cleaning, and drying windows.

The invention consists generally in the combination of a scrubbing-brush, a Wiper,l and a mop consisting of a sponge or other like substance. p

The invention also consists in certain combinations of parts whereby I am enabled to simultaneously secure all of these instrumentalities to one handle.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective' showing a handle with yoke or fork carr'ying a Wiper, a Swinging loop for holding the sponge being swung out of operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the wiper and the scrubbing-brush connected with the handle, the brush being held in position by the swinging sponge-holding loop. Fig. 3 shows my improved washer with all its parts connected with and carried by the handle.

l is the handle, carrying at its extremity a fork or yoke 2, and between the forks or arms of this yoke I pivot a Swinging loop 3, having an eccentric shank or projection 4. To hold this swinging loop in open or closed position-that is, in inoperative and operative position-I provide a friction-spring 5, and to securely lock the loop in its operative position I provide a sliding sleeve or ferrule 7. At the extremity of the fork or yoke 2 I attach a strip of rubber of considerable thickness and substance by clamping the same between cross-bars 8, and I designate this device as a wiper, the same being useful and convenient in wiping and freeing the surface of window-glass from an excess of water and Serial No. 644,546. (ModeL) bringing it to the condition Where it may be dried and rubbed with another part of my combined instrument. The cross-bar 8 or connection between the forks 2 is provided with fingers or projections 9 9, which serve to interlock with the back of scrubbing-brush 10, through grooves formed in the back of said brush, and a strip or bar 11 above said grooves. The brush 10, being connected with the fingers 9, is held firmlyin its position, as shown in Fig. 2, by means of the vibrating spring-loop 3, locked in position by means of the sleeve or ferrule 7.

12 is a sponge or other like absorbent substance, held within the yoke 2 by means of spring-loop 3, which also serves to hold the scrubbing-brush firmly in its place. It is obvious that any one or any two of these devices may be connected with the handle and used alone and in succession, or any two or all of them may be connected with the handle at the same time, and thereby furnish an implement adapted to serve the purpose of scouring, Washing, and drying windows in an efficient manner. For example, in case there is putty or other substance on the surface of the glass the scrubbing-brush may be dipped in whiting or other cleaning-powder and the glass scoured or cleaned of such adhesive substance. Vhen a hose plays upon the win'- dow and it is desired to wipe the surplus of water from the surface, the rubber Wiper is ready for use, and should it be desirable to immediately dry the surface of the glass the sponge or mop may be used for that purpose or the sponge or mop may be soused in water and used to rub or scrub the surface of windows, and afterward it may be treated with the wiper and finally dried by the absorbent sponge or mop.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In awindow-Washingappliance, the comlbination of a Wiper, a scrubbing-brush., a

sponge or mop, and a vibrating spring-loop adapted to grasp the substance of the mop and to hold the scrubbing-brush in its position, substantially as described.

2. In a window-Washing appliance having a wiper, a scrubbing-brush, and a mop, the
