"Car and WindowWashers.
No. 136,310. PatentedFeb.25,1873;

PATRIOK S. DEVLAN, OF JERSEY CITY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND VVAL- TON BROTHERS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR ANI) WINDOW WASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,310, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, PATRICK S. DEVLAN, of Jersey City, in the State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Car and Window Washers, of which the following is a specification:
This improvement is intended for washing windows and the outsides of cars and consists in a head composed of astationary and movable jaw hinged together and mounted upon a handle. Sponge or similar material is contained between the jaws, and by a lever from the movable jaw the same can be compressed to eject water upon the article being washed.
In the drawing, Figure l is a vertical section' and Fig. 2 an end view of said improvement, the sponge being removed in the latter view.
aois the handle, to which is connected the plate b forming the stationary jaw of the head. The swingingjaw c is hinged to the jaw 12, the ends of the jaws b and 0 being bent at right angles to form lugs, which are lapped, and rivets inserted through them to form hinges (I, upon which the jaw c swings. The sponge e, orsimilar porous material, is contained between the jaws b and c, and these jaws are made with penetrating points i, which serve to hold the sponge securely in place. From the jaw c the lever h extends, and to its lower end a cord, 1, is fastened and connected at a convenient point upon the handle a. By pulling upon this cord 1 the lever h acts to bring the jaw c nearer to the jaw 12 and compress the sponge, forcing more or less of the water which may be in the sponge out upon the surface being washed. A catch, m, keeps the jaws from spreading apart. This catch is fast-- tened to the jaw b, and its hooked end enters a hole in the jaw 0.
By this washing apparatus the surface to be cleaned can be rubbed and the dirt loosened as usual, and then a supply of water ejected upon it to wash it clean, and a sufficient supply of water for a large extentof surface can be carried in the'sponge, and the necessity of frequently dipping the brushes into water is avoided, which is a great advantage when ususing a long-handled brush.
I claim as my invention The window and car washing apparatus, composed of the jaws b and c, hinged together and combined with the lever h and handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed by me this 10th day of August, 1872 PATRICK S. DEVLAN.
