Beit known that I, WILLIAM DUDLEY MAY- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fayetteville, in the county of Washington and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Egg or Packing Case, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to packing cases or boxes for shipping-eggs or other commodities which are generally transported in crates.

The invention relates more particularly to the cover and the means for securing the cover to the body of the box or case, whereby it is possible to dispense with side or longitudinal strips in order to prevent lateral displacement of the cover when the package or crate is in service.

For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.

The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacriiicing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an inverted view of a case having the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the upper portion of the case. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, the cover being removed and inverted. Fig. 4 is a detail view ofthe combined stop and catch block. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a catch.

Corresponding and like part-s are referred to in the following descri tion and indicated in the several views of t e drawings by the same reference characters.

The body of the box, case, or package is of usual construction and of ordinary form, being of rectangular shape, and is provided at one end with a strip 1, having a vertical notch 2 midway of its ends, and at its opposite end with a block 3, formed on its inner side with a longitudinal groove 4, and having notches 5 near its ends on the same side for the pro j ection of the finger-pieces 6 of catches 7, whereby the cover is locked to the box.

Any form of catch may be employed so long as it will answer for securing the cover in place when properly adj usted. The block 3 conceals Serial No. 639,881. (No model.)

and protects the catches, which latter are coninthe notches 5. The form of catch preferred is shown most clearly in Fig. 5, and is constructed of a wire blank doubled upon itself, forming a spring-loop 8, and having an end portion of a member of the loop bent at right angles to the plane of the loop, forming the fingerpiece 6,which latter operates in a notch 5, whereas the spring-loop is confined in the groove 4 between the block and the contiguous end of the box 9.

The cover 10 is of a width corresponding to the breadth of the box, so that its edges will come flush with the sides of the box, and is slightly longer than the box, and is provided at its ends with cleats 11 and 12,Which snugly embrace the ends of the box, the cleat l1 having a notch 13 to receive the block 3 and having a longitudinal groove 14 corresponding with the longitudinal groove 4, so as to receive the projecting ends of the catches when the latter are moved outward to secure the cover after the latter has been placedin position. The cleat l2 has a channel or longitudinal seat 15 formed in its inner face to receive the strip 1, and a pin 1G extends across the said channel or seat 15 and is adapted to enter the notch 2, so as to act jointly with the block 3 to prevent lateral displacement of the cover after the latter has been placed in position.

In applying the cover to the box or case the cleat 12 is adjusted so as to receive the strip 1, after which the opposite end of the cover is lowered upon the box, thereby causing the block 3 and notch 13 to interlock, after which the catches '7 are moved outward and, entering the groove 14; secure the cover in place. The reverse of this operation releases the cover and admits of it being removed from the box or case, as will be readily understood.

So far as the particular construction of the catch is concerned it maybe used in connection with a keeper or screw-eye applied to the admit of the keeper or screw-eye entering therein. This arrangement admits of both cleats extending the full width of the box or case.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. In a packing case or box, the co1nbinafined in the groove 4 and operate therein and upper cleat, the lower cleat being notched to tion of a strip and block applied to opposite sides of the body of the box, a cover having a cleat at one end to interlock with the said strip and provided at its opposite end With a cleat formed with a notch to receive the said block, and catches con cealed and held in place by the aforesaid block and adapted to be projected to engage with the cleat upon opposite sides of the notch therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a box or case, the combination of a block applied to aside of the box, a cover for closing the box and adapted to interlock therewith at one side, a cleat secured to the opposite side of the cover and having a notch to receive the aforesaid block to prevent lateral displacement of the cover, and catches held in place by the said block and concealed thereby, and adapted to be projected to engage with the cleat upon opposite sides of the notch therein, substantially as set forth.

3. In a box or case, the combination With the body of the box, and the cover therefor, of a block secured to a side of the body and having a longitudinal groove and notch on its inner side, a catch operatin g in the said groove and notch, a cleat applied to the cover and having a notch to receive the said block and provided with a groove on its inner face to correspond with the groove of the block, and

means for securing the opposite portion of the cover to the body, substantially as set forth.

4. In combination, a box or case, a block secured thereto and having a groove and a notch, a spring-catch formed of a Wire blank doubled upon itself, forming a loop which operates in the groove of the block, and having an en d portion of a side member bent at right angles to the plane of the loop to provide a finger-piece which operates in the notch of the block, and a cover having a cleat adapted to receive the projecting end of the said catch to hold the cover in place, substantially as set forth.

5. In combination, a box, a strip secured to a side of the box and having a notch, a block applied to the opposite side of the box and vprovided Wit-h catches, a cover, and cleats 'at opposite ends or sides of the cover, one of the cleats having a channel on its inner face invtersected. by a pin to receive the aforesaid `notched strip, and the other cleat having a notch to receive the aforesaid block and provided on its inner face with a longitudinal groove to receive the projecting ends of the catches, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
