J. N. ANDERSON. BOX FASTENER No` 427,723, Patented May 13, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE N. ANDERSON, OF OONVAY, MISSOURI.
`BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,723, dated May 13, 1890. Application filed September 6, 1.889. Serial No. 823,169. (No modelJ To @ZZ whom, t may concern;
Be it known that l, JESSE N. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oonway, in the county of Laclede and State ot' Missouri, have invented a new and useful Fastening Device for Crates or Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for egg crates or boxes.
The object of the present invention is to provide a box-fastener of simple and inexpensive construction, and capable of securely locking a cover without liability of its accidentally becoming loose.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed ont in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of an end of a crate provided with a fastener constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the position of the parts when locked. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts unlocked. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view, the parts being in the position illustrated in Fig. l.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates an egg-crate of ordinary construction, which is provided at its ends with pieces B, which support depending end pieces c of a cover O.
The cover O and the pieces B and c are recessed and adapted for the reception of a fastener D, which is comprised of two sections d and d', the former of which is secured to the cover and the latter of which is hinged to `the former and is provided with a circular opening d2, designed to be engaged by a headed stud E, standing out from the supporting-piece B. The head of the stud projects through to the opening LZ2 and is engaged by a slide F, which is arranged upon the section d and has its edges fturned under the same, and moves up and down to bring its lower end into and out of engagement with the head e of the stud E. The slide is provided with a slot f3, whose lower sides f diverge and form an open lower end to direct the stud into the slot f3. The upper end of the slide has a flange f2, by which the slide is operated, and to prevent the slide becoming accidentally raised a spring G is secured to the back of the section d, and has one end free and provided with a projection g, that extends thro ugh a perforation d3 and engages the flange f2 and securely holds the slide down upon the stud. The recess c2 of the end piece c has its cen tral part c3 cut somewhat deeper than the rest to allow the spring to be depressed to release the slide.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood.
What I claim isl. 'lhe fastener for egg-crates, consisting. of the section d, designed to be secured to the cover, the section d', hinged to the section d and provided with an opening adapted to receive a headed stud, and a slide arranged upon the outside of the fastener and adapted to engage the head of the stud projecting through the said opening and prevent the return of the stud, substantially as described.
2. A boxrfastener comprising the section d,-
the section d, hinged to the section d and provided with an opening adapted to receive a headed stud, and the slide having a slot to engage the head of the stud, substantially as described.
3. A box-fastener comprising the section d, the section d', hinged to the section l and provided with an opening d2 and .a perforation d3, the slide F, and the spring G, having its free en d provided witha projection adapted to extend through the perforation d5 and engage the slide, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE N. ANDERSON.
