FASTENING DEVICE FOR CASKET-COVERS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. McNnnNnY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 773 Broadway, in the city of Watervliet, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Fastening Devices for Casket-Covers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to fastening devices for casket covers, and the object of my invention is to provide a device for securing the cover of a casket, which will be simple in construction and noiseless and effective in operation; together with such other elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. 1 accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cover and a section of the side of the casket along its upper edge. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper edge of the casket with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the hook, G, and disk, F.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

On the underside of the cover, C, I place the hooks, G and L, which may be attached to suitable disks, F and M, respectively, or formed integral therewith, the disks secured to the cover by suitable screws, j and m, or in any suitable manner. The hooks, G and L, project from the disks at an acute angle thereto and preferably extend beyond the edge of the disks, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The hook, G, is cut away at the base of the hook near the disk, forming a recess, II, into which the retaining plate, I may project when the hook in operative position in connection with the edge of the casket.

The upper edge of the casket, A, is cut away to allow for the plates, B, B, to be countersunk therein and the openings, .I and K, are cut into the top of the side of the casket, which openings are partly covered by the plates, B, B. The plates, B, B, are each provided with an opening through which the hooks, G and L, may pass, the hooks projecting beneath the plates and by them retained therein. It will be noticed that in order to insert the hooks, G- and L, into the openings, J and K, the cover will necessarily be moved longitudinally of the edge of the casket, and that as the hooks, G

and L, are pressed into the openings, J and K, the hooks are inserted beneath the plates, B, :3. In order to prevent a retrograde movement of the cover, (J,'a:fter the hooks, G- and L, have been placed in position in the openings, .I and K, I pivot the retaining plate, E, by means of a suitable screw, g, to the top of the casket and cause one portion, 0, thereof to enter the recess, II, in the shank of the hook, Gr, which will. prevent a backward movement of the hook and tend to hold both hooks, G and L, in position in the openings, .I and K, in contact with the plates, I3, II, respectively. The retaining plate, I is cut out or provided with an oil'- set, N, to enable it to pass around the hook, (i, on the disk, F, except that portion, a, thereof which passes into the recess, II, in the shank aforesaid.

In order to hold the retaining plate, I in position after it has been brought in contact with the hook, G, I attach to the edge of the plate, F1, near one end thereof, the sliding bar, 0, which may be made of a piece of thin metal bent at P and attached to or having I'OI'lIlQCl integrally therewith a rod or plate, II, which may be moved backward and forward through the ears, S, S, on the edge of the plate, E. On the plate, B, I place the overlapping downwm'dly extending flange, T, behind which and between it and the side of the casket the end of the bar, 11, may be projected, thus preventing the plate, E, from turning on its pivot after it has been brought into engagement with the hook, t. For the purpose of guiding the hooks, G and L, into the openings, (I and K, I preferably depress a portion of the plates, B, B, at one end of the openings, .I and K, as at I), and 7?. making a sort of runway for the passage of the hooks.

I do not limit the application of my invention to a casket as my 't'astener may be applied to any box.

\Vhat I claim as my invention and dcsire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A cotlin fastener, comprising a disk; a hook thereon projecting at an acute angle thereto and extending beyond the edge of the disk, the hook cut away at the base thereof near the disk forming a recess for the reception of a retaining plate: a means for securing said disk to the cover of a coffin near the edge thereof: a plate covering a portion of an opening in the top of the side of the coflin, through which plate into said opening said hook is adapted to pass and extend beneath a portion of the plate which holds the hook within the opening; a locking flange attached to said plate and projecting from the edge thereof, having a portion of the flange extending below the face of said plate; a portion of the plate at one side of said opening depressed, forming a runway for the passage of the hook into said opening; a retaining plate pivoted to the top of the side of the cofiin over said first mentioned plate with an offset in one side thereof, permitting the plate to be moved beneath the cover after the hook has been inserted into the plate, said plate passing into said recess and holding the hook in position beneath the plate; a sliding bar secured to the edge of said retaining plate adapted to engage said locking flange when the retaining plate is inserted into said recess.

2. A. coflin fastener, comprising a hook provided with a recess near the base thereof, said hook secured to and projecting at an acute angle to the coffin cover near one edge thereof; a plate covering a portion of an opening in the top of the side of the coffin, said hook adapted to pass through said plate into said opening and extend beneath a" portion of the plate which holds the hook in the opening; a retaining plate pivoted to said first mentioned plate adapted to be inserted in said recess; a sliding bar attached to the edge of said retaining plate; a catch on said first mentioned plate with which said sliding bar may en age.
