Description
UNiTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR IIYPOLITE DUB-AND, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
WASHBOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,491, dated March 8, 1898.
Application filed April 23, 1897.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR HYPOLITE DU- RAND, a citizen of Canada, residing at Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'ashboilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to washboilers in which hollow columns are used as conduits to direct hot water or suds from the bottom upward and over clothes placed in a boiler to facilitate the cleansing thereof; and the objects of my invention are to provide the false bottom with foldable legs pivoted thereto and with removable hollow columns to permit said false bottom to be used as a washboard in connection with the boiler or with an ordinary tub. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of the washing-machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of the false bottom or washboard of the apparatus removed from the boiler and shown with one of the legs turned at right angles to the bottom and projecting therefrom. Fig. 4. is a central longitudinal section of one of the hollow columns. 7
In said drawings, A represents the boiler, which is of any suitable form, preferably with a flat bottom, fiat sides, and semicylindrical ends. Within the boiler is placed the false bottom 13, which consists of a top plate 1, having a periphery corresponding with that of the boiler and nearly fitting against its sides. Said plate 1 has corrugations 9 transversely thereof to constitute a rubbing-surface for clothes, as found ordinarily in washboards, and is supported by a hoop 2, the upper edge of which is soldered or otherwise secured to the bottom of the plate 1 a short distance Within its periphery, said plate and hoop constituting together an inverted box, under which when in use the water is generally in a state of ebullition.
In each end of the plate 1 there is an opening 4, through the bottom of which is introduced a hollow tapering column 5, the lower end of which fits in the opening 1. To support and removably lock the column to the plate 1, the inner bottom edge is flanged outwardly at 3. The upper face of the flange 3 Serial No. 633,481. (No model.)
bears against the bottom of the plate 1, and a turn-button 6, pivoted to the bottom of said plate, has its outer end bent down and horizontally to press against the bottom of the flange 3 and support the column in a locked position. Each column has secured to about one-half of its upper edge at 8 a plate of metal 7, thin enough to be elastic or yielding, according to the amount of pressure of the water in ebullition issuing between its bottom face and the free upper edge of the column. The water issues in a thin sheet, which falls upon the clothes placed upon the plate 1, and thence it returns under the false bottom between its periphery and bottom and the walls of the boiler.
To permit the false bottom to be used to rub clothes thereon by hand and be retained at a suitable angle either within the washboiler or Within a tub, it is provided with two pairs of legs 11 and 12, pivoted to the sides or hoop 2 upon bolts 13, passing through their upper ends and through said hoop. The legs 12 have their upper ends rounded, so that they can be folded inwardly, as in Fig. 1, or outwardly, as in Fig. 3, to add to the length of the false bottom at 15 and form legs therefor. The upper ends of the legs 11 have only their inner corner rounded, to permit them to be folded, while the outer corner is kept angular to form a shoulder to abut against the bottom of the plate 1, and consequently an angle 14, at which point the legs rest'on the edge of the boiler or of a tub; but before the false bottom is so used the hollow columns 5 are removed from the openings at therein.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. In an attachment to a washboiler a falsebottom plate 1 having a corrugated surface, a hoop-support therefor, turn-buttons pivoted to the bottom of said plate, and hollow columns removably secured to said plate by said turn-buttons substantially as described.
2. An attachment to a washboiler consisting of a corrugated plate, a hoop-support therefor, two pairs of legs pivoteCLto said hoop, and hollow columns removably secured to said plate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
