UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COLUMBUS G. NEARN, OEFOWIJKES, TENNESSEE.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,372, dated March 8, 1898. Application filed December 18, 1897. Serial No. 661,709. (No model.)
To all whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that I, COLUMBUS O. NEARN, of Fowlkes, in the county of Dyer and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Post, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is a fenoe-post constructed of glass and in tubular form, providedat; each end with a closure to prevent the entry of Water and other foreign matter, and having on its outer surface a series of pairs of annular ribs, each pair forming an annular space around which the wire of the fencing may be turned to fasten the wire to the posts This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claim defines the actual scope of the invention Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence having posts constructed according to my inventi on, and Fig. 2 is a section of one of the posts.
Each post is constructed of a tubular glass column a, having its ends respectively closed by stoppers b, fitted and secured in the ends. The outside of the post is provided with any desired number of pairs of annular ribs 0,
spaces in which the wires cl of the fence may be secured.
The invention is adapted to fences of all classes, and the posts may have such ornamentation and form of embodiment as is suited to the particular purpose for which the post is adapted.
The post is planted as illustrated in Fig. 1, and being constructed of glass the post cannot decay. The stoppers I) prevent water from entering the interior of the post and breaking the same upon the freezing of the water.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A fence-post formed of a cylindrical glass tube provided with annular ribs running around its outer side, such ribs being arranged in a series of pairs so as to form spaces in which the fence-wires may be bent, and a stopper fitted securely within each end of the tube and serving to hermetically close the tube.
COLUMBUS C. NEARN.
