RANDALL MCDONALD DIXON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MATCH-sox.
SPECIFICATION forming part ci' Letters Patent No. 605,276, dated June 7, 1898. Application filed September 18, 1897. Serial No. 652,169. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
match-boxes, theA object of the invention being to provide a match-box for use of bicycleriders which can be readily applied to the belt of the riderand from which the rider can readily remove the matches, one at a time, whilel the bicycle is in motion without moving his body and without danger of deranging the supply of matches in the box.
A further object is to provide a match-box for the purpose stated which shall be simple in'construction, easy and cheap to manufacture, and which shall be eifectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved match-box. Fig. 2 is an end view with the face-lid open.
' Fig. 3 is a plan view withthe face-lid open.
Fig. 4 is a face View with the face-lid closed and the end lid open. tail views.
A represents `the body of fmy improved match-box, which may be conveniently made of light sheet metal. The box is provided with a face-lid l, which is connected at one edge thereto by means of a spring-hinge 2, adapted to maintain said lid closed or to maintain it open to its full extent. The lid 1 is also maintained securely closed by means of a lip 3 on the lid and adapted to enter a notch or recess 4 in the body of the box. The lid l is also made with two (or more) hooks 5 5, which are preferably formed integral therewith and areadapted to be placed 011 the belt of a bicycle-rider.
One end of the box A is provided with a hinged lid 6, provided with a spring 7, adapt- Figs. 5 and 6 are deed to maintain the lid normally closed or to hold itopen to its full extent when it is desired toV remove a match from the box.
- The box A is provided internally, at the sides thereof, with guides 8 for the accommodation of a comb 9. The comb 9 comprises a `plate 10, having aseries of spring lingers or teeth 11 adapted to bear upon the matches in the box. A lip 12 projects from the plate 10 and serves as a finger-piece to be grasped by the user for removing the comb when it is desired to fillthebox with matches.
When the box is to be filled, both lids will be opened and thecomb removed, as above intimated, when the matches can be placed in said box in regularV order, after which the comb will be slid in place in the guides provided for it and the fingers permitted to bear upon the matches.
When it is desired to remove a match, the user will open the end lid 6 with one hand and remove a single match, whereupon the spring -finger of the comb which pressed against said match will press upon the succeedin g match in the'box and prevent its withdrawal, and the various springfingers will combine to prevent the derangement of the matches in the box when one is removed.
My improvements are very simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, easyto manipulate, and are effectual in'all'respects in the performance of their functions.
Slight chan ges might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit my- `self to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters 2. The combination in a match-box, of a4 body portion having a lid at one end, guides yinthe other end of said body portion, a comb having spring-fingers to bear on matches in the body portion and adapted to slide freely in said guides, and a finger-piece on said comb whereby to remove it from the body portion In testimonywhereof I have signed this when the boX is to be filled with matches; sub,- speeoation in the presence of two subscribstantially as set forth. ing witnesses.
