SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,130, dated June '7, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that IRVING G. PLATT, deceased, late of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, and of which I, LEWIS A.PL TT, administrator of said IRVING G. PLATT, de-' ceased, do hereby declare-the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in buttons, and moreparticularly to that kind or class thereof commonly known and referred to as tack or rivet buttons, the object of the same being to provide an article of this kind which shall be simple and cheap in manufacturing and which may be attached to cloth or fabric by hand, thus doing away with machines now commonly used or employed for this purpose.

With these and other ends in view the invention consists of certain novel; features of construction, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the improved button before being attached to the cloth or fabric. Fig. 2 is a similar View thereof after the same has been secured.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the button, havinga hub or depressed center and preferably fitted with a top or face plate a, the bottom of the button being provided with a hole or opening I) for the passage of the tack or fastener B, substantially conical in shape, said hub having the shape or form of a truncated cone and provided with the internal rib 0-, formed by striking or spinning the metal of the hub inwardly.

Within the hub and between the bottom of the button and the rib c is located the holding-ring C, formed of. wire, the ends d of which are slightly separated, the wire being of such thickness that the central opening 6,

formed thereby, will snugly contain the tack or fastener Band at the same time allow of a slight vertical movement between the rib c and the bottom ofthe button before the latter is attached to the cloth.

From the above description it will be evident that any downward strain imposed upon the tack or fastener tending to separate it from the button will have the effect of drawing downward the Wire ring C,which, by reason of the cone-shaped hub, will be forced more tightly and closely around the fastener,

thus preventing the latter from becoming detached or separated. v It will also be evident to those skilled in the art and without further illustration that the ribs might be changed or varied in many Ways, and hence the claims are not restricted theretoe. g., in lieu of the rib, portions of the metal of the hub or shank might be indented or struck inwardly, thereby producing inwardly-extending points which would serve identically the same purpose and produce the same result as a rib extending entirely around the hub or shank.

.Although it is preferred to use a tack of conical shape, it will be understood that the same may be straight, it being only necessary to have the same of sufficient thickness to slightly open the gripping-ring when the latter is raised, for said ring will tightly clutch or grip the fastener when the latter is pulled downwardly by reason of the fact that the harder it is pulled the harder or tighter it will grip the fastener by reason of the conicalshaped hub of the button, especially when the fastener is slightly roughened.

Having fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desiredto be secured by Letters Patent, is-Q I I v 1. A button formed with a hub or shank in the form of a truncated cone, and containing a movable severed ring, and a tack or fastener passed through the bottom of said button and tener adapted to pass through said ring and be held thereby, substantially as described. 10
