BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,988, dated December 15, 1891.

Be it known that I, CLARK M. PLATT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in buttons, and more particularly to that. kind or class thereof commonly known and referred to by the trade and public as tackbuttonstl1at is, buttons consisting of the button proper and a fastener in the shape of a rivet, tack, or other similar device for securing the button to the fabric.

The object of my present invention is to improve upon buttons of this kind in the matter of its simplicity of construction and its economy in manufacture; and with such objects in View it consists in certain novel featn res of construction and combination of parts, as Will hereinafter be fully described, and pointed out in the claim In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of my improved tack-button, the parts being separated. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the button after being attached to the fabric, cloth, or other material.

A represents the button proper, made of metal, as is usual in this class of buttons, and of the ordinary form, the lower portion a of the same being turned inwardly to prevent the sharp edges from cutting the cloth or fabric to which the button may be attached and leaving an opening (L'Of sufficient diameter to allow of the entrance of the tack or fastener.

B represents an anvil or die held station ary Within the body of the button andv constructed with a curved or arched top I) and having its lower edge I) turned inwardly, forming a small central opening b for the en trance of the tack or fastener and in alignment with the opening a. By thus forming the anvil a space b is left between the top I) and bot-tom b for the reception of the bent and upset end of the fastener, as hereinafter described.

As will be seen by Figs. 1 and 2, the plate B is located at some distance above the lower end of the button, ]eaving a space 0 between it and said bottom a, and is securely held in place by fitting in a recess d, formed in the body of the button by curving orbending the metal outwardly.

C is a tack or fastener made of metal and having its shank e tapering and pointed at one end and headed or flanged atits opposite end.

In securing thebutton to the cloth the tack or rivet C enters the opening a. after being forced through the fabric and the opening b and, striking against the upwardly-curved plate I), has its extreme pointed end overturned, and the pressure or force being continued the end is swaged or upset, preventing any subsequent disengagement of the parts.

Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the button A, formed with a depressed center, having an opening a therein, of a disk secured in the recess d and constructed with the arched top I) and bottom I), forming the recess b and with the opening 1) above and in alignment with said former opening, and a tack or fastener, substantially as described.
