SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,720, dated May 31, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLAN ROBERT CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Birmingham, county of Jefferson, and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in bottles and means for closing them, the object thereof being to provide a device of this character constructed in such a manner that a change in its distinctive appearance is brought about by the act of uncorking or opening it, whereby the bottle cannot be reused or recorked after it has been emptied of its original contents.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of the upper portion of my improved bottle, showing the same filled and corked. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the stopper used for closing the neck of the bottle. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the cork used for sealing the bottle, the two sections thereof being disconnected from each other; and Fig. i is a side elevation of a device adapted for use in the operation of uncorking or opening the bottle.
In the practice of my invention I provide at the upper end of the bottle-neck an enlarged opening having an interior screwthread 1 formed thereon, adapted for engagement with a screw-stopper 2. The lower end of the neck of the bottle is of a slightly-contraeted diameter and engages with a cork A, comprising two semicircular sections a and at, these said sections being held together to prevent vertical displacement thereof by means of a disk a composed, preferably, of noncorrosive metal or any other substance of a nature harder than the cork. This said disk is used as a bearing-surface for a plunger B, adapted for forcing the cork within the bottle-body for the purpose of opening the bolt tle. One section of this said cork contains, preferably, a plate a adapted for containing a number a or any other suitable matter. This said plate is used in the nature of a conpon, and in use it will have some value attached thereto, whereby the user of the bottle will desire to remove it, so that it may be redeemed by the manufacturer.
The stopper 2 is preferably composed of glass, and it has an aperture 3 leading therethrough, adapted for discharging liquid from the bottle. closed by means of a loosely-fitting cork 4c. The glass stopper is further provided with an annular flange 5 and projections 6, adapted for use in attaching or screwing the stopper to the neck of the bottle. The stopper is f urther provided with a concaved under surface 7 to admit of readily discharging all the contents of the bottle.
In the operation and use of'the invention the bottle is first filled to a suitable height. The sectional portion a is then forced within the neck thereof by means of any suitable instrument, after which the screw-st0pper 2 is inserted within the outer end of the neck, and to prevent the removal thereof it is preferably cemented therein by means of a thin coating of any-suitable cement.
In order to remove the contents of the bot tie, it is necessary to force the cork A downwardly within the body thereof. Free outlet is then admissible through the channel 3 of the stopper 2, and the cork 4 may be used for temporarily closing the bot-tle until the same is entirely empty. It is obviousthat the sections of the cork A will separate after they are forced within the body of the bottle, whereby it will be impossible to recork the bottle, and if the plate a is placed at a valuation sufficiently high to make it an object for the user of the bottle to return same to the manufacturer it will be necessary to break the bottle in order to secure the plate,whereby an incentive is afforded for the destruction of the bottle and the manufacturer is as-.
sured that it will not be used for the purpose of containing spurious compounds.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new,' and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1, In a bottle, the combination of a threaded stopper having a concave lower end permanently secured within the outer end of the neck thereof and a removable sectional cork placed within the lower portion of the neck thereof, the sections united by a disk, the said stopper having an aperture leading therethrough for discharge of fluid from the bottle,

2. In a bottle, the combination of a cork comprising two sections united by a disk in the lower portion'of the neck thereof and a concealed coupon between said sections, and
