UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELWOOD c. DAVIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TROLLEY FOR ELECTRIC CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,928, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed May 25,1897. serial No. 637,991. We model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELWOOD O. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolleys for Electric Cars, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to trolley-arms for trolley-cars; and the object thereof is to provide a trolley-arm and a swiveled extension in which is mounted a trolley-wheel, said extension being also provided with spring-supports which project in line therewith and with the trolley-arm, and which are also provided with a trolley-wheel, a further object being to provide a device of this class whereby proper connection with the electric wire or conductor may always be made and retained.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which- 4 Figure 1 is a side view of the upper part of a car provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a plan view of a portion of the trolley-arm, sh owing the attachment connected therewith; and Fig. 3, a detail view of a part of said at.- tachment.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 5 the upper part of a car, and connected therewith is a trolleyarm 6, this connection being made at 7 in the usual or any preferred manner, and the trolley-arm 6 is provided at its outer end with a metal head 7 on which is formed a shaft 8, which is provided with two collars 9, and connected with said draft is a swiveled sleeve 10, this connection being made by detachable inwardly-directed rings or bands 11, between which and the collars 9 are ball-bearings 12, and the shaft 8 is provided at its outer end with anut and washer, as shown at 13.
The swiveled head 10 is provided with projecting arms 14, through which passes a shaft 15, on which is mounted a trolley-wheel 16, and connected with the ends of the arms. 14
are supplemental spring arms 17, each of which is composed of a central spring-rod 18, on which is wound two coils of spring- wire 19 and 20.
The coils 19 and 20 of spring-wire are wound on the spring-rod 18 in opposite directions,
this construction being best shown in Fig. 3,
shown a section of a trolley wire or conductor.
The object of this construction is to provide a yielding spring-support for the main trolley wheel 23 and also to provide a supplemental trolley wheel, as 16, by means of which connection with the wire or conductor 24 may be retained when the car is turning a curve or passing under a bridge, the device being particularly adapted for use in turning curves, and in this operation it will be apparent that the spring-arm 17 will yield laterally as well as Vertically, and the wire or conductor will come in contact with the. supplemental trolley-wheel 16, and both of said trolley-wheels will thus operate to retain the trolley-arm in connection with the wire or conductor.
By constructing the spring-arm 17 as herein shown and described I secure great elasticity and at the same time sufficient strength, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
'Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A trolley-arm for trolley-cars, said trolley-arm being provided with a swiveled attachment which is provided with spring-arms which project parallel, and in the same direction as the trolley-arm, said spring-arms being provided at their outer ends with a shaft on which a trolley-wheel is mounted, substantially as shown and described.
2. A trolley-arm for trolley-cars, said trolley-arm being provided with a swiveled attachment which is provided with spring-arms which project parallel, and in the same direction as the trolley-arm, said spring-arms being provided at their outer ends witha shaft on which a trolley-wheel is mounted, and said attachment being also provided between the inner ends of said spring-arms with a supplemental trolley-wheel, substantially as shown and described.
3. A trolley-arm for trolley-cars, said trolley-arm being provided with aswiveled attachment which is provided with spring-arms which project parallel, and in the same direction as the trolley-arm, said spring-arms being provided at their outer ends with a shaft on which a trolley-Wheel is mounted, and said attachment being also provided between the inner ends of said spring-arms with a supplemental trolley-wheel, and said sprin garms being composed of central rods on which are wound a plurality of coils of spring-wire, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 24th day of May, 1897.
