y TROLLEY.
` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,828, dated May 24, 1904.
Application led October 17, 1903.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN S. WECKMAN and ROBERT J. M1LLARDcitizen`s of` the United States, residing at Carnegie, in `the county ofv Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, vhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolleys; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the samereference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specilication, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing a portion of a trolley-wire, showing the trolley-wheel around the pole and the trolley-wheel detached from the wire. Fig. 2 is a view showing a portion of a car, the pole properly attached, and the wire in contact with the trolley-pole. Fig. 3 is a detached View of the lower trolley-pole spring. Fig. 4 is a bottom or under yside view of the trolley-pole head and its different parts.
The present invention has relation to trolleys; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. v
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the pole, which may be of usual construction and of a length suiiicient to properly engage the wheel 2 with the trolley-wire 3. To the top or upper portion of thel pole is, attached the head 4, to which head are pivotally attached the arms 5, which arms will extend beyond the head,` and the portions extending beyond the periphery of the wheel 2 diverge from each other, as illustrated in Fig. 4. For the purpose of preventing any accidental movement of the arms 5 they are located upon the inner faces of the head, and the different parts by which the arms and wheel are actuated are within the width of the head.
equivalent, to which cross -jbar is connected Serial No. 177,407. (No model.)
` the link 9 and the link connected at its lower or opposite end to the hinge 10, which hinge is connected to the free end of the spring 11, which spring is connected to the head 4 by means of a suitable clamping-bolt 12.
The spring 11 is so constructed that it will have a tendency to pull the link, which in turn pulls the lower ends of the arms 5 and will come above the trolley-wire 3.
ssl
The position o f the arms 5 (shown in Fig. 1)
is their normal one when the wheel 2 is disconnected from the trolley-wire 3; but when the trolley-wheel 2 is brought in contact with the trolley-wire 3 the wheel 2 will be moved downward. with reference to the head 4, which turns the upper ends of the arms 5 downward and the lower or inner ends of said arms upward, the spring 11 being of such a tension that the pressure of the wheel 2 upon the wire 3 will overcome the spring and pull its free end toward the head 4, as illustrated in Fig.
.2, thereby bringing the upper ends of the -erably of the form shown and is v attached to the turn-table 15, lwhich turn-table may be of the form shown, or it may be of vany other desired form, inasmuch as the turn-table within itself forms no particular part of the present invention.
To the free end of the spring 14 is journaled the roller 16, which roller comes under the pole 1, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the'tension of the spring 14 is such that it will hold the roller 16 in close contact with the pole 1 and have a tendency to lift the pole so as to elevate its free end and bring the wheel 2 in proper contact with the wire 3.
It will be understood that the instant the wheel 2 leaves or starts to leave the trolleywire 3, or, in other Words, jumps the trolleytheir upper ends, so as to bring them above the trolley-wire and prevent the wheel E2 from leaving the wire 3.
We have not shown in the drawings the ordinary rope attached to the trolley-pole or its head; but it will be understood that this may be attached in any convenient and well-known g manner.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a pole, a head iXed thereto, the members of the head provided with slots, arms pivoted to the head, an axle and a trolley-wheel mounted thereon, said aXle extended through the slots in the head, a spring secured to the head, a hinge connected to the free end of' the spring, a cross-bar eonneeted to the lower ends of the arms, and a link connected to the cross-bar and spring, 2O substantially as and for the purpose speeiiied.
In testimonyT that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. WECKMAN. ROBERT J. MILLARD.
