Be it known that I, REUBEN'M. TENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turin, inthe county of Coweta and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements inbuttons, the object of the same being to provide a device of this kind which may be used as a collar-button, cuff-button, or shirt-stud, which is easily inserted into place, which is easily removed,

and which cannot become accidentally detached when once inserted.

The invention consists of a button made in two parts, each being the counterpart of the other, both formed with a flat portion constituting one-half of the head of the button, with a shank extending downwardly therefrom, and an arm extending outwardly from the lower end of said shank, the arms on the two parts when the button is in its closed form extending in diametrically opposite directions. At the angles formed between the shanks and arms of the respective parts of my button the same are pivoted together, so that they are free to swing relatively to one another for the purpose of bringing'said armsV directly opposite one another.'

In the drawings forming part of this speciication, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved button. Fig. 2' is a similar view of the two parts disconnected. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the position of the button when it is first inserted through the buttonhole. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the button in place in the shirt or cuff. Fig. 5 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention.

My improved button is made up of two parts, l and 2, respectively, each being the counterpart of the other. Both of these parts are formed with iiattened portions 3 and 4, respectively, which unitedlyconstitute the head of the button. They are also formed with downwardly-extending shanks 5 6 and with outwardly-extending arms 7 8 at the lower ends of said shanks, the said arms eX- tending in dia-metrically opposite directions when the button is in its closed position. The two parts of my button are pivoted together, as shown at 9, at the angle between their Shanks and their outwardly-extending arms, so that they are free to moverelatively to one another for the purpose of bringing the arms 7 and 8 directly opposite one another.

In using my device the, parts are moved into the position in which they are shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and then the two arms- 7 and S are free to be passed through the buttonhole of the shirt or other article of apparel d to which the button is to be applied. The flattened portions 3 and 4, constituting the head of the button, are then drawn together, throwing outwardly the arms 7 and 8, as shown in Fig. l. When in this position, the arms are diametrically opposite to one another and cannot slip through the buttonhole, and they are held in this position by means of a collar or other device which passes around the Shanks 5 and G, preventing any lateral movement thereof. To remove the button from the'buttonhole, a reverse operation to that just described may be performed.

In the modified form of myinvention shown iny Fig. 5.01? the ydrawings I provide at the end of each of the arms 7 and 8 laterally-extending wings 10 l0, which are adapted to engage the side edges of a buttonhole to prevent the accidental slipping of the button therefrom. This form of my device is especially adapted to be'used upon shirts or collars having long buttonholes.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isne v l. A button, made in two parts pivoted one to the other, both having flattened portions which unitedly constitute the head of the button ,shanks extending downwardly therefrom, and outwardly-extending arms at the lower ends of said shanks, the said arms extending in diametrically opposite directions when the button is in its closed position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
