BLAST-PIPE AND BRIDLE FOR BLAST-FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,668, dated February 22, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS E. BEAGHAN, of Shenandoah, in the county of Page and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blast-Pipes and Bridles for Blast-Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a connection between the air-blast main and twyer of a blast-furnace in which the joints can be readily and conveniently broken or separated to permit the twyer to be quickly replaced or repaired.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in providing pipe-sections between the main and twyer which are connected by separable joints, the sections being so supported and connected to levers that they can be readily separated and also as readily brought together and held in rigid engagement with each other, making the proper connection between the main and furnace. V In the following specification I have entered into a detail description of my invention, ref- I erence being had to the accompanying drawin gs and to numerals thereon which designate the difierent parts, and what I consider to be the novel features of construction are specifically set forth in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing the connection between a main and blast-furnace constructed and arranged in accordance with my .invention, the parts or sections being connected. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts separated. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the section which connects with the twyer of the furnace. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the main operating-lever. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the intermediate section and adjacent parts.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the front wall of the frame, which is provided with the usual draft-opening 2, in which the twyer 3 is placed, the said twyer having a flared outer end which contacts-with the contractedinner end of the opening.

which hot air is furnished to the furnace through the interposition of pipe-sections constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. The main 4 has rigidly riveted thereto a short section of pipe 5, to which are attached arms 6 and 7, the ends of which project beyond the end of the pipe-section and are provided with slots 8. These arms are also provided with outwardly-proj ecting bearing-pins 9, forming the fulcrum for a lever having parallel members 10 and 11, which extend around the pipe-section 5 and are connected to each other on opposite sides thereof, presenting an extended arm 12 on one side and a downwardly-inclined arm 13 on the other. The arms 6 and 7 provide hangers for the penstock or intermediate section 14:, the latter having trunnions 15, which pass through the slots in'said arms or hangers, the said trunnions being also engaged by links 16, which are pivoted to the side members 10 and 11 of the lever and are provided with slotted ends in which the trunnions pass. The penstock or intermediate section is also connected to the outer end of the arm 12 of the lever hereinbefore described by means of an adjustable connecting-rod 17, the adjustment being secured by the turnbuckle 18.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that in connecting the several pipe-sections the operating-arm 13 of the lever is brought downward, which will raise the penstock in engagement with the section of the main and also in position to be engaged by the section which engages the twyer, the outer part of the latter being turned and engaged by the hooks. Now in order to form a proper enengagement between the blowpipe and twyer a tension device is provided consisting of a link 27, to which is pivoted a lever 28, to the short end of which is attached a bar 29, carrying a helical spring 30, that bears at its outer end against a nut 31 and at its inner end against a ring or washer 32. In operation, after the pipe-sections between the main and twyer have been connected, the lever is operated to bring the bar 29 between the ears 33 33, depending from the.penstock, with the ring or collar 32 bearing against the same, and by a further movement of the lever the blowpipe is pressed against the twyer and held by the tension of the spring. After the lever has been thrown to this position it is locked by a ring Set, which is passed over the outer end of the same and over the end of the rod 29. It will be noted that the link 27 is pivoted to a flange 35 of the furnace. It will also be observed that connection between the several pipe-sections is formed by beveled edges which present inclined surfaces that form a tight joint.
In connection with the operating lever which brings the penstock in engagement with the short section of pipe extending from the air-blast main I provide an operating-lever 36 therefor, having parallel members 37 37,which embrace the arm and are held in engagement therewith by a removable wedge 38, connected to the lever by a chain 39, said lever having additional members or side plates 40, which also engage the said arm 13. This forms a detachable operating-lever for the lever which operates the penstock, the last-mentioned lever being held after operation by a swinging loop or pawl 41, which is pivoted to the penstock and swings over the outer end of the arm 13, being held in engagement therewith by a wedge 42, the latter being carried by the arm, to which it is connected by a chain 43.
In the operation of disconnecting the pipesections the lever 28 is firstreleased and then the arm 13 also released,which allows the penstock or intermediate pipe-section to swing free from the other sections. The section which connects with the twyer can then be swung out of the opening and the twyer removed for repairs or for the purpose of replacing it with a new one, after which the connections between the air-blast main and furnace can be quickly accomplished by manipulating the levers, as hereinbefore described. This forms a connection which can be readily made and broken and will allow the twyer to be repaired or replaced in much less time than heretofore accomplished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with an air-blast main and furnace, of hangers extending from said main, an intermediate section or penstock pivotally supported in said hangers, an independently pivoted operating lever, pivoted arms extending from said lever to said intermediate section, and blast connections extending from said air-blast main and furnace; substantially as specified.
2. The combination with an air-blast main and furnace, of depending slotted arms or hangers, an intermediate section or penstock pivotally supported in said hangers and capable of vertical movement therein, a lever independently pivoted to said arms, a pivotal connection between said lever and intermediate section, blast connections extending from said air-blast main and furnace, and means for retaining said lever in position; substantially as specified.
3. The combination with an air-blast main and furnace, of depending slotted arms or hangers, an intermediate section or penstock pivotally supported in said hangers and capable of vertical movement therein, a lever independently pivoted to said arms, an adjustable pivoted connection between said lever and intermediate section, blast connections extending from said air-blast main and furnace, and means for retaining said lever in position; substantially as specified.
4. In a blast-furnace, the combination with the air-blast main and twyer, of a short section of pipe extending from the main and provided with slotted arms or hangers, a penstock having trunnions which engage the slot-ted arms or hangers, and a lever pivoted to the arms or hangers and connected to the lower end of the penstock by a rod; together with a detachable lever presenting members which embrace the arm 13 of the aforesaid lever, and a wedge which is passed through transverse openings in one side of the members to hold the detachable lever in engagement with the aforesaid arm, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a blast-furnace, the combination with the main and twyer, of a short section of pipe extending from the main and having hangers or slotted arms, a penstock or intermediate section having trunnions which engage the slotted arms or hangers, a lever pivoted to the said slotted arms or hangers and having slotted links which engage the trunnions of the penstock, and a rod connecting the outer end of the lever to the lower end of the penstock, together with means for locking the lever,substantially as shown and described.
6. In a blast-furnace, the combination with a main and twyer, of a short section of pipe extending from the main and having slotted arms or hangers, a penstock or intermediate section provided with trunnions which engage the slotted arms or hangers, a lever pivoted to the said slotted arms or hangers and connected to the penstock or intermediate section by slotted links anda connecting-rod together with a bail carried by the penstock to be passed through the end of the arm of the lever, and a wedge for holding the lever in such engagement, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a blast-furnace, the combination with the main and twyer, of a short section of pipe extending from the main and having slotted .arms or hangers, a penstock or intermediate section provided with trunnions which engage the slotted arms or hangers, and a lever pivoted to the hangers and connected to the penstock or intermediate section by slotted links and a connecting-rod; together with a blastpipe section which bears against the twyer, said section having projecting lugs which are recessed, and hooks carried by the lower end of the penstock-section to engage the lugs, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a blast-furnace, the combination with the main and twyer, of a short section of pipe extending from the main, a pivoted lever supported by the said pipe-section and connected to a pivotally-mounted penstock or intermediate section to bringthe same in engagement with the aforesaid pipe-section, a blast-pipe section which bears against the twyer,-a pivotally-mounted lever having a rod pivoted thereto at the point of leverage, and a spring mounted upon the rod and adapted to engage the penstock-section, substantially as shown and described.
9. In ablast-furnace, the combination with the main and twyer, of a short section of pipe extending from the main, a penstock or intermediate section, and devices for bringing the said penstock in engagement with the short section of pipe extending from the main, ears projecting from the penstock; together with a pivoted lever, a rod pivotally connected to the lever, and a helical spring mounted upon the rod and engaging a nut thereon, said spring being adapted to bear against the ears of the penstock when the rod is brought between the same, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.

In ablast-furnace,the combination with the main and twyer, of a short pipe-section extending from the main, a lever supported by saidpipe-section, and a penstock, or intermediate section connected to the lever by which it is brought into engagement with the short section of pipe; together with a blastpipe section which bears against the twyer and consists of two parts adapted to turn one within the other, means for connecting the penstock to the blast-pipe section, a lever pivoted to a suitable support, a bar pivoted to the lever and a spring mounted on the bar, said spring being adapted to bear against part of the bar and against the penstock,

13. The combination with an air-blast main and furnace, of a pivotally-mounted intermediate section or penstock, connections extending from said air-blast main and furnace, an independently-pivoted lever and a connecting-rod engaging the lower portion of the intermediate section for swinging said intermediate section into and out of engagement with said connections, and a yielding connection engaging the lower portion of the penstock to hold the same in contact with the furnace connection; substantially as specified.
14. The combination with an air-blast main and furnace, of a pivotally-mounted intermediate section or penstock, connections extending from said air-blast main and furnace, a pivotally-mounted operating-lever, a pivoted connection depending from said lever and connected to said intermediate section, and an auxiliary lever or handle removably connected with said operating lever; substantially as specified.
15. The combination with an air-blast main and an intermediate section, of a blast-pipe connected with a twyer, and an outer section rotatably connected with the blast-pipe section and adapted to be engaged with the intermediate section; substantially as specified.
