BLAST-FU RNAGEi-CHARGING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,112, dated February 16, 1897. Application filed September 26, 1896. Serial No. 607,029. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN A. NEELAND, of Duquesne, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blast-Furnace- Charging Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying draw- Vings, forming part of this specilication, in

My invention relates to apparatus for hoisting and charging stock into blast-furnaces, and is designed to improve the construction shown in the application of William Rotthoif and myself, Serial No. 581,355, filed February 29, 1896.
In the drawings, in which similar numerals denote like parts, 2 indicates the blastfurnace, having a framework 3 supported thereon, this framework having mounted upon its top a pulley-wheel 4, over which passes a cable 5, which leads from the winding-drum in the engine-room.
6 is a car movable upon an inclined track '7, which extends to and over the top of the furnace, being supported upon suitable trusswork. This carriage consists of a fourwheeled truck, having pivoted to its rear portion a swinging bail 8, to which the cable, which is preferably a double cable, is secured.
. Pivoted about the front axle of the truck is a yoke 9, which is provided with a depend- V ing bifurcated hook 10, arranged to engage the handle 1l of the bucket. This handle is secured at the upper end of a rod 12, which carries at its lower end the movable bellshaped bottom of a cylindrical bucket 13.
At its upper end the track extends to a vertical guideway 14, in which moves the U- shaped continuation 15 ofthe track, this extension being a part of a sliding frame 16, having channel-shaped side webs, as shown in Fig. 2.
To the frame 16 is secured, by a link 17, a lever 18, having a counterweight 19, this lever being actuated by a motive cylinder 20, trunnioned upon the framework, as shown,
and having a piston-rod 2l, pivotally secured to the lever. This cylinder is supplied with the usual fluid supply and exhaust pipes,
` which lead to a suitable valve in the enginehouse, and it constitutes the main feature of my invention, as by its use the movements of the sliding frame and of the bucket are under the control of the operator, in contradistinction to the apparatus shown in the former application above recited, wherein the sliding frame moves downwardly automatically as the forward portion of the carriage enters it.
To regulate the movements of the lever and the sliding frame, I provide-a dash-box cylinder 22, the piston-rod of this cylinder being pivoted to the framework at point 23, this cylinder being filled with oil or some similar liquid.
The furnace is provided with the usual charging-bell 24, supported upon a crosshead 2,5, which is reciprocated by the pivoted levers 26, having yokes 27 connecting them to links 28, pivoted to opposite ends of the cross-head. These levers 26 are actuated by a motive cylinder 29, pivoted upon the top of the furnace and having its piston-rod pivotally connected to a cross-bar connecting the tw'o levers, this cylinder also having supply and exhaust pipes leading to a valve in the engine-house.
The cross-head 25 moves within guides 30, secured to the casing 31, and at its upper end this casing is provided with an annular flange 32, upon which the lower end of the bucket rests. Below this flange the casingis provided with an inner seat 33, against which a bell-shaped gas-valve 34 seats, this valve being normally held to its seat by a counterweighted lever 35, pivoted to the casing by a link 36.
The action of the device is as follows: -The carriage carrying the filled bucket is drawn up the inclined track until the forward wheels of the carriage enter the section of track carried in the sliding frame. The operator then moves the valve of the cylinder 20, so as to move the sliding frame downwardly, -the movement of the lever being regulated by the dash-pot. As the frame moves down, the lower end of the bucket comes to rest upon the flange 32 of the casing, and the bell-shaped IOO bottom then moves down, carrying with it the gas-sealing valve, and the charge being thus released slides over the bell-shaped bottom and is distributed evenly around the charging-bell. The valve of the cylinder then being moved in the opposite direction the bell bottom is carried upwardly, and, striking the lower end of the bucket, the bucket and frame are carried up until the frame reaches its normal position, when the operator lowers the carriage down the inclined track ready for the next load.
The advantages of my invention result from the fact that the movements of the sliding frame and the bucket in its vertical movement are completely under the control of the operator, so that if the bucket is swinging to and fro when the carriage reaches the upper point of its travel he can hold the car at this point until the bucket will come to rest so that it will seat squarely upon the upper portion of the bell-casing. rlhe movement of the bell bottom to the bucket is positive, insuring the dropping of the entire bucketful, and the operation of the device as thus arranged is found in practice to be much more satisfactory than where the vertical movements of the frame and bucket are automatic.
