No. 599,243. Patented Peb. 15, 1898.
W/TNESSES A llmuey /NVENTOR TN: mams mms co. nuoro-mma. WASHINGTON. u c
Nrrn Str-ns GOTTLIEB J. KLINGLER, OF SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,243, dated February 15, 1898. Application filed January 7, 1897. Serial No. 618,382. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, GOTTLIEB J. KLINGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My .invention has reference to a novel construction in a table, the object being to provide a device of this character that is adapted especially 'for use as an eating-table and by means of which the dishes upon the table can lbe brought opposite any person eating thereat,
so that the use of a waiter is obviated.
The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a table constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is a central vertical' section.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates the base, which is provided with the casters 2. The said base is provided centrally with an upright socket 3, having an upwardly-facing shoulder 4 and an uprising stern 5. This stem is hollow and is cylindrical both exteriorly and interiorly and is provided near its upper end portion with a spring-actuated detent 6, that passes through the opening therein in the usual manner. The table 7 is round and is provided with a plurality of knobs 8 at its periphery. Said table is provided centrally with an upright opening 9, that is protected by a bearing-plate 10, having a downwardly-facing shoulder 11. The stem passes through this opening .9,while the downwardlyfacing shoulder 11 rests upon the upwardlyfacing shoulder et of the base. The stem 5 extends a little distance above the table and, as before stated, is hollow to receive the spindle 12 of the rotatable shelf 13. This shelf is provided with a suitable downwardly-facing shoulder 14, formed on the casting thereon, which surrounds the upward end of the spindle 12. The said spindle 12 is provided with a plurality of transverse grooves 15 to receive the end of the spring-actuated detent 6.
From the foregoing description it is seen that a table constructed in this manner can be moved bodily in a convenient manner and, furthermore, that the table proper can be rotated to bring any portion thereof opposite any person seated around the same, while, furthermore, the shelf 13 can not only be rotated, whereby persons at different points can remove and replace dishes and the articles therefrom and thereon, but also it can be elevated or depressed, according to the exigencies of the case, or can be entirely removed. It is evident that a table constructed in this manner serves to reduce the labor necessary in the waiting and serving a meal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
In a table, the combination with a base, of a vertical casting mounted thereon and comprising a hollow vertical stem and an annular shoulder, a rotatable table mounted on said stem, a bearing-plate mounted upon the bottom of said table and having an annular shoulder adapted to rest upon the annular shoulder ofthe base-casting, a rotatable shelf having a notched spindle mounted in said hollow stem, and a spring-pressed pawl mounted on said hollow stem so as to engage any one of the notches thereof to hold the same in any desired elevation, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GOTTLIEB J. KLINGLER. Witnesses:
