GORNIGE FOR ROLLING SHUTTERS. No. 596,929. Patented Jan. 4, 1898.

INVENTOR g Jw. a. M28011; fl rzii a ATTOR EY' UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
JAMES GODFREY WILSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CORNICE FOR ROLLING SHUTTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,929, dated January 4, 1898. Application fil d April 23, 1897. Serial No. 633,516. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it WMLZ/ concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES GODFREY WIL- SON, a subject of Victoria, Queen of Great Britain, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oornices for Rolling Shutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has reference to certain improvements inthe construction of cornices for rolling shutters.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a broken perspective showing my improved bracket; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation showing the inside of one of the lateral supports for the bracket; and Fig. 3, a detail perspective, partly in section, of such lateral support.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Heretofore when flexible shutters have been employed for an opening, which shutters roll on a horizontal support at the top, it has been usual to employ some sort of a cornice or covering to conceal the roll at the top, and my invention aims to do just this thing, but at the same time to provide a housing for the roller and the parts carried thereby, which housing shall be very simple and durable, besides presenting a very ornamental appearance.
\Vith these ends in view I provide side brackets 1, which are secured to the casing at opposite sides of the opening in any suitable manner. Each bracket has formed therewith on its inner face a suitable support 2 for the roller (not shown) which carries the shutter. A groove 3 is cast in each bracket along the inner face thereof and following the contour of the outer edge of the bracket. This groove is open at the top and bottom, and an angle-bar r rests upon and is secured to lugs 5, cast with said brackets, said bar extending from bracket to bracket at the base of the grooves 3.
The rolling shutters commonly used are made of sections flexibly secured together and presenting a generally corrugated appearance, and in such instance I would force flexible sections 6, presenting the same corrugated appearance, down through the grooves 3, so as to entirely inclose the space between the side brackets.
Of course the sections 6 reach from bracket to bracket and are readily drawn down through the grooves until they are arrested by the angle-bar 4, which latter acts as a stop and also presents a neat finish when viewed from below.
The location of the lugs 5 and angle-bar 4: is such that there is abundant space in the rear thereof to permit of the ready passage of the shutter-sections inside the cornice to the roller.
The general appearance of this bracket may be varied by employing ornamental sections of wood or other material and forcing them down through the grooves so as to present any suitable pattern or design. After the ornamental sections are in position the bracket as a whole is completed by securing the top 7 in position. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An overhead bracket for rolling shutters, comprising the side brackets secured to the top of a casing on opposite sides thereof and provided with grooves along their inner faces near the outer contours thereof, the angle-bar supported by said brackets and extending between the same, one face of said bar being horizontally disposed while the other face extends vertically at the bases of said grooves, and the flexible ornamental sections forced at their ends within said grooves and against said angle-bar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAS. GODFREY WILSON.
