UNrTnn STATES FATENT @rrrcn.
EDWARD H. FOOTE, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOWSSTAND OR HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,200, dated November 23, 1897.
Application filed March 20, 1897. Serial No. 628,397. (No model.)
v To all whom iv may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD I-I. FOOTE, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show Stands or Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for the display of pickles, preserves, and similar goods,
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a show-stand embodying my invention. r Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents an enlargement of aportion of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a bottom View of one of the covers. Fig. 6 represents a modification of the construction shown in Fig. 4.
The same letters and figures of reference indicate the same parts in all the views.
In the drawings, a represents a base which is formed to support a plurality of glass jars b, the base being provided with suitable means for retaining the jars in position and preventing their lateral displacement. I prefer to make the base of two sections 2 and 3, which are glued together or otherwise securely united, the upper section 3 having orifices formed to receive the lower ends of the jars.
c 0 represent standards affixed to the base a near opposite ends of the same, said standards projecting above the upper ends of the ars.
cl represents a hinge-rod affixed to'standards c c and extending between the same, said rod being located slightly above the upper ends of the jars. The standards are preferably bent, as shown in Fig. 2, or are otherwise arranged,so that the hinge-rod is located at the rear of the series of jars.
Fig. 3 represents e 8 represent a series of covers which are mounted to swing upon the rod cl, the engagement between the covers and the rod being preferably effected by means of an elongated slot 6 in the rear edge of each cover, said slot being formed by grooving the cover from its rear edge and inserting a filling-piece 6 If desired, however, the cover may be engaged with the rod d by means of eyes (a as shown in Fig. 6.
To insure a close fit of each cover on the accompanying jar and compensate for any inequalities in the height of the jars or unevenness of their upper edges, Ico-nnect the covers e flexibly or loosely'to the hinge-rod d in such manner that the covers can have a slight bodily vertical play. To this end the slot e may be vertically elongated, as shown in Fig. 4, or the screw-eyes a may be correspondingly elongated, as shown in Fig. 6, either construction permitting the cover to play vertically upon the hinge-rod cl.
To contribute additionally to the formation of a tight joint between the covers and the jars, I provide each cover with an annular gasket 6 formed to bear upon the upper edge of the corresponding jar, said gasket being made of felt or other suitable yielding material, glued or otherwise attached to the under sides of the covers. I prefer to form annular grooves in the covers for the reception of the gaskets, as shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 6.
f represents a rest, which supports the covers when they are raised, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Said rest is a narrow strip attached to the upper portions of the standards and extending between the same -in position to support the covers when they are raised and inclined backwardly. I prefer to attach the rest to the standards by means of wooden plugs f, attached to the end portions of the rest and driven into the upper ends of the standards, the latter being preferably tubular metal rods.
It is obvious that my invention may be embodied in an apparatus comprising one jar and a cover therefor instead of a plurality of jars and covers.
I claim 1. A show stand or holder of the character specified, comprising a base, one or more jars or receptacles mounted thereon, standards attached to the base, a hinge-rod supported by and between the standards, one or more covers for said jars mounted to swing on the rod, and a rest for the covers attached to the standards and projecting above the jars.
2. A show stand or holder of the character specified, comprising a base, a plurality of jars or receptacles mounted thereon, standards attached to the base, a hinge-rod supported by and between the standards, covers for the said jars mounted to swing on the rod, and a rest for the covers attached to the name to this specification, in the presence of 20 two subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of March, A. D. 1897.
