Description

U NrTnn STATns PATENT L. o. ENGLIsH, or comme, New Yoan.
IMPROVEMENT IN STUNIP-EXTRACTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,235, dated September 25, 1866.
To all 'whom t may concern: v
Be it Vknown that I, LUzoN C. ENGLISH, of Corning, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have made new and useful Improvements in Stump-Extractors; and I do hereby declare the followin g to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, sufficient to enable one skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made part of this specification, and in whieh- Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the foot C.
rIhe improvement consists of a verticallyeXtensible derrickframe, from which the hoisting apparatus is suspended, the frame being provided with an adjustable brace.
It also consists of an adjustable foot to one support of the frame.
In the drawings, A Aare the front supports ofthe derrick, and B the back support, of which the foot G is pivoted so as to be adjustable 1'n a horizontal plane.L The brace D connects the standards A A and B, and is vertically adjustable, as shown in red lines, Fig. 2, as the foot C becomes partially embeddedin the'ground under the pressure brought thereon' in lifting the stump and tearing it loose from the earth. The brace has a block, E, whose face agrees with the edge of the standard B, at the different inclinations it assumes, and a catch, c, enters a notch in the edge of the standard to maintain the required relative position. j
Suspended from the bolt which forms the point of junction for the standards A A and B, is a frame, F, carrying two sheaves or.pul leys, overwhich the chain' G passes, as it does also over the sheaves in the lower frame H, whose lower end has hooks I I, -which forni means for attachment of the stump-chain J, which is wrapped around the stump or inserted under one of the main roots, as circumstances may render convenient.
The chain J, passing upward and over a pulley, K, descends and windsaround chainroller L, which is rotated by thegear-wheel M andthe pinion N, the latter being ou the secondary vshaft O, which is rotated by the drawing upon the cord I? on the drum R.
To the end of the cord or rope P a horse may be attached, and as he draws upon the line a very great power is exerted upon the stump-chain J.
If the line be all unwound before the requisite lifting is effected, the secondary shaft-pinion is thrown out of engagement with the gear-wheel M, when the latter being retained `by the pawl S, the shaft O is rotated in the contrary direction and the rope rewound upon the drum It, the parts occupying the position shown in red lines in Fig." l.
When the shaft O is in its position for lifting, the clutch T is down and maintains the shaft O in place, but when the clutch vCl) is lifted the sha-ft O may be slipped along longitudinally for the purposeexprcssed.
When a great strain is brought upon the derrick, the feet spread and sink in theisoil, which brings a great tension upon/the brace and lateral strain on the supports A A B, which is apt to fracture them. At such times by lifting the catch c and allowing thel block E to raiseonthe support B, the lateral strain on theV supports is relieved and the @dan ger avoidedz lhe rnacliinebeing put up in a held and the supports loeldtogether by the brace and catch, it maybe hauled about the ield to different points without taking it down or to pieces.
The foot C has a selnispherical cup or hol` low on its upper surface, which :receives the rounded end of the leg B, the leg and the foot being retained in conjunction by the bolt and nut b d, the surface h of the hemispherical protuberance on the lower end of the leg B playing in the recess of the foot as the latter is adjusted to suit the inclination of the ground.
Having described my invention, whatI claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The derrick-frame A A B, jointed at its upper end, and, provided witlgan fadjustable brace, as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with thederriok-fralne and avoid a breaking-strain o'n the sipport, A A B, the pivoted foot at the end of the leg as described.
B of the frame, as and for the purpose de- L' C. ENGLISH.
scribed. f
3. The block E and catch e, so arranged Witnesses: M .f as to render the brace adjustable tothe EDWARD A. KNIGHT, f angie formed by the supports A A and B, W. F. HALL.
