CHARLES M. OHAMBLIN AND THOMAS VVA LTZ, OF NEWTON, ILLINOIS.
BURlAL-WINDLASS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,344, dated June 1'7, 1884.
Application filed April 17. 1884.
To all whom it 12mg concern..-
Be it known that we, CHARLES M. CHAM- nmw and Tnoims \VALTZ, citizens of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Jasper and State'of Xllinois, have invented anew and useful Machine for Lowering Coffins and Burial-Caskets into Graves, and for other purposes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in burial-windlasses; and its object is to provide faciiities for lowering coffins, burial-caskets, boxes, &c., into their places in the grave. WVe attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of the machine as it appears ready for use; Fig. 2, a plate to be fastened on the coffin or casket; Fig. 3, a hook attached to the ends of cords or straps; Fig. 4, ring fastened to cofiin or coffin-box; Fig. 5, grappling-hook.
The machine, Fig. 1,- consists of a frame work, A, with iblding legs or standards B B B B, which are hinged to the frame A at the point aa, so as to fold up against the side when being carried about or stored away. The legs are provided with circular slotted braces and thumb-screws C O, which hold them in position. Near the top of the frame is a rope-drum, D, having a crank, E, for turning it, and having four ropes or cords, F F F F, two of which extend each way, passing over pulleys G G G G, for guiding the ropes, the end of the ropes or cords being provided with suitable hooks, H H H H, to insert in plate shown in Fig. 2 or rings in Figs. 4 and 5, as hereinafter shown.
Fig. 5 consists of a bar, d, provided with three rings, 0 e e, and two swinging rods, f f, with two brace-rods, g g, the rods f f being The braces g 57 pass through a ring, 2', and are provided with a loop or hole at the ends, through (No model.)
which the rods f f pass, and are so fastened to the bar (Z and adjusted that they may slip up or down the rods ff, adjusting themselves to the pressure or strain brought upon them, the whole to be used in connection with the machine, Fig. 1, by attaching to the same by means of the hooks H H H H, the hooks 7r 7 being inserted in the plate, Fig. 2, when fastened on the coflin, or rings, Fig. 5, fastened on cofiin or coffin-box, or otherwise, when necessary or convenient.
The machine, Fig. 1, may be used without the use of the grappling-hooks by attaching the hooks H H H H directly to the plate, Fig. 2, when on the coflin, or to the ring, Fig. 5, on coffin or coffin-box, or otherwise, as found necessary or convenient.
"Ve are aware that prior to our invention machines for lowering ooliins. &c., have been made with rope-Windlass. Ve therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; neither do we claim the plate shown in Fig. 2; but
Vhat we do claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in burialwindlasses having folding legs or standards 13 B B B, of Windlass or drum D with ropes or cords F F F F, pulleys G G G G, and hooks H H H H, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in burial windlasses with grappling-hooks having bar 01, of ringse e e, swinging rodsf and bracerods g substantially as set forth.
3. The grappling-hooks provided with bar (1, rings 0 e e, swinging rods f f, and bracerods g 5 passing through center ring, 2', substantially as described, and shown in Fig. 4., and for the purpose set forth.
