.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,427, dated August 17, 1897. Application led February 61 1896. SeriallNo. 578,286. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern/.-
Be it known that I, OHANCY F. HEATH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Thompsonville, in the county of Benzie and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedclothing-Clamps, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact specification. 1
This invention has reference to a -novel construction in an attachment for bedsteads, the object being to provide devices for Securely holding the ends of the covers when the bed is made up; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter` described and specifically claimed. A'
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 'l is a vertical longitudinal section of the end portion of a bedstead providedjwith my improvements. Fig. 2 is an end elevation ofthe end piece of a bedstead. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
It will be understood that this invention can be applied to either the head or foot board of a bedstead, although it will be found more useful at the foot-board, and for this reason I have illustrated the same in this manner and willnow proceed to describe this construction.
In the said drawings, R indicates the side rail of a bedstcad, and M the mattress. The foot-board and posts are indicated by p. Secured to the foot-'board are a plurality of spring-brackets S, consisting of thev upright ends or arms, connected at their lower ends with plates E, that are fastened to the footboard. The upper ends of the spring arms or brackets S are about flush with the top of the mattress, and fastened to the upper end portions of these spring-arms is a transverse bar C, whose `upperedge is also even withthe top of the mattress and which stands parallel with the foot-boardand a little distance therefrom. The lower inner end of this bar C is provided with an inwardly-projecting ledge or shoulder, while the inner face of the said bar is inclined upwardly or toward the footboard from this shoulder or ledge ntoward thel top of the bar. A wedge W is situated between the bar C and the foot-board and consists of a plate tapered from its upper end toward its lower end and provided with two pivoted rods L, whose upper ends engage teeth CL upon the foot-board or end posts of the bedstead.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that when the bedclothes are smoothed out at the foot of the bed,by placing` the wedge W on top of the bedclothing and then forc-Y ing it into the opening or space between the clamping-bar C and the foot-board, the said bed-clothing will be securely held between the wedge IV and the clamping-bars C and foot-board of the bed. The shoulder at the Vlower end of the clarnping-bar serves to limit the downward movement of the wedge, while the enlarged upper end of the clamping-bar serves to form a tight wedge. After the clothes have been thus secured by the wedge the rods LY are thrown in engagement with the teeth a to hold the wedge in'place.
.In Fig. 4 is shown a modified construction, and it consists in constructing the clampingvbar D with a shoulder at its upper end. This construction is made so that the wedge can be used without the pivoted rods L, as this upper shoulder on the clam ping-bar serves to engage and hold the upper edge of the wedge, as will be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with the end board of a bedstead, of arplurality of spring-arms fastened thereto Vand extending forwardly and upwardly, a clamping-bar rigidly secured to the upper ends of said spring-arms, a Wedge situated between said clamping-bar and said end board, and means for holding said wedge downwardly and in position.
2. The combination with the end board of a bedstead, of a plurality of spring-arms fastened thereto and extending forwardlyv and upwardly, a clamping-bar rigidly secured to the upper ends of said spring-arms, an up- -wardly-facing ledge on the inner side of said clamping-bar and at the lower edge thereof, the'face of said clamping-bar between said ledge and the upper edge-thereof being inclined, a wedge situated between said clamping-bar and end board, and devices for holding said Wedgedownwardly and in position.
The Combination with the end board of :L bedstead having toothed racks thereon, of at plurality of spring-arms fastened thereto, a clamping-bm secured to said spring-arms, a wedge situated between said clamping-bar mideud board and provided with pivoted rods arranged to engage the two racks of said end board.
