T. E. WIBDERSHEIM, Jr. KNOGKDOWN BOX.
No. 586,646. Patented July 20, 1897.

ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE E. IVIEDERSHEIM, JR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNOCKDOWN BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,646, dated July 20, 1897. Application filed August 13, 1896. Serial No. 602,593. (No model.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE E. .VIEDER- sHEIM, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, haye invented a new and useful Improvement in Knockdown Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a novel construction of knockdown box which has a flap pro- ,jecting outwardly at or near the central portion of a side thereof, said flap being adapted to simulate a flower, a plant, or other desired article.
It also consists of a novel formation of a blank from which the box is constructed.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the blank employed from which the box is constructed. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the box, showing the same in the act of being assembled. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a finished box, showing the flap projecting outwardly from a side thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a blank, the same having a body which is divided by the scorings E into side portions B and D and the front and rear portions 0 and E, respectively, said portions assuming their positions relative to each other in the setup box, it being of course understood that the above terms "side, front, and rear are merely relative terms and apply to the box when in the position shown.
G designates a tab, which may have adhesive material applied thereto and be secured to the side B of the blank when the latter is bent up in the act of producing the box.
II, J, K, and L designate tabs which proj ect from the lower side of the blank, the tabs H and J being opposite each other and bent toward each other in the act of assembling, while the tabs K and L hold the tabs II and J in place, the above construction being old per se and therefore requiring no further description.
M designates a flap or continuation of the front portion 0, the same consisting of the extension N, which is continued to form the flap P, the two latter being separated by the scoring Q, upon which the (lap P is bent at an angle to the extension N, as will be apparent from Figs. 1 and 2. From the side portion B extends the flap R, the same having a body portion T, which may be colored, and the tab U, the two latter being separated by the scoring V.
S designates a short tab, which also projects from the side portion B and is separate from the flap B, said tab S when the box is assembled being opposite to and in line with the short tab \V, which extends from the side portion D near the scoring which separates the portions D and E.
X designates a flap or continuation of the rear portion of the box E, the same consisting of the body portion Y, which may be colored similar to the portion T, and the portion Z, from which extends the tab B, which latter is separated from the portion Z by the scoring A.
The operation of assembling the blank or constructing the box therefrom is as followsi The blank is bent upon the scorings F and the tab G suitably secured to the side portion B. The tabs II and J are now folded toward and upon each other, and the tabs K and L are joined, thus completing the bottom of the box. The short tabs S and IV are bent downward and folded toward each other, after which the flap X is turned downwardly and the tab B is tucked in, being now in contact with the front portion 0. The flap Pis next bent on the scoring Q, so as to be at substantially a right angle to the portion N, which latter is next caused to rest upon the portion Z of the flap X. The flap R is now turned over the portion N and the tab U is tucked over the latter and into juxtaposition with the side D, as will be evident from Fig. 2, the box then appearing as in Fig. 3 and the flap P standing upright at or near the center of the box, upon which flap or extension may be printed, stamped, or otherwise delineated any device desired. 7
It will of course be understood that when the box is completed the portions Y and T are visible at the top of the box, and since the same form a front and back ground for the device simulated on the flap P they may be stamped, painted, colored, or otherwise treated, as desired.
IIavin g thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a knockdown box having a front portion, an extension thereon, a flap attached to said extension and projecting at an angle thereto in combination with a flap adapted to hold said extension in position and means on the latter-men tioned flap for holding the same in position.
2. In a knockdown box having portions forming top, sides and bottom, an extension on one of said portions for closing that part of the box which is desired, a flap on said extension projecting at an angle thereto, and a second flap adapted to cover said extension.
3. In a knockdown box having flaps or portions forming top, sides and bottom, an extension on one of said portions, a flap on said extension projecting at an angle thereto, and another flap on one of said portions which is adapted to hold said extension in position.
4. A knockdown box, having a front portion 0, the latter being provided with a con tinuation M, the same consisting of the extension N, having the flap P attached thereto, and adapted to simulate a flower, plant, or other device, in combination with the flap R,
the latter having a body portion T and a tab U, whereby said flap is held in position.
5. In a knockdown box, ablank consisting of a suitable body portion, having the tabs H, K, J and L, a tab S and flap R located adjacent to each other and opposite to said tab H, the flap M consisting of the portions N and P, located opposite to said tab K, the tab IV located opposite the tab .I, and the flap X 0011- sisting of the portions Y and B located opposite said tab L.
In a knockdown box, a blank consisting of a body, divided by scoring into the side portions 13 and D, and the front and rear portions 0 and E, said side portions B being provided with the tabs H and S located opposite to each other, said tab S having the flap R adjacent thereto, said flap consisting of the portions T, and U, separated by the scoring V, said front portion 0 having the tab K, and the flap M located opposite thereto, said latter flap consisting of the portions N and P, separated by the scoring Q, said side portion D having the tabs and J located opposite to each other, and said rear portion E having the tab L and the flap X located opposite to each other, said flap having the portionsY and Z and the tab B separated from said portion Z by the scoring A.
