IMPROVEMENT` IN SPRlNG-MATTRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 57,223, dated August 14, 1866.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES VAN DYEOK, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Mattresses and I do hereby declare that the following is afull,clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, made part of this specication, in Which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a top view; and Fig. 3 is a plan, showing the construction of the diaphragm.

A is a staunch frame, of iron or other suitable material, across which is spread the springlinen b, made of suitable material. a a are spiral springs, tapering from both ends tO ward the middle. These springs are passed through the springlinen b to their middle, being sustained by the fabric through which they pass, and secured in fa vertical position by a net-work of cords, c, extending from the frame, and knotted or otherwise att-ached to the outer coil of the spiral springs, as shown in Fig. 3.

The frame and springs thus constructed are inclosed in acasing of ticking, d, suit-ably padded to protect the springs.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A spring-mattress constructed with aframe, A, diaphragm b, and spiral sprin gs a a, inelosed in a easing, d, the several parts being constructed, secured, and arranged for use substantially as set forth.
