i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. MCOREERY, OF BRADFORD, OHIO.
BED-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,910, dated Application filed October 8, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. McUREEaY, of Bradford, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, Hwhich will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to m'nkeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure lis a plan View of my improved bedspring. Fig. 2 is a sideview, and Fig. 3 is a` detail view, in perspective, of the lower end of one of the springs. 4
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to that class of springs for bed-bottoms which consist of two separate coils formed of a single piece of wire, the central portion of which forms a bridge or connecting-piece, and which are therefore known as twin springs, and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. In the drawings hereto annexed,A A represent two ordinaryconical coiled springs formed of a single piece of wire, the central portion of which serves to connect the upper coils of said springs, which are coiled in opposite directions, as shown. The ends of the upper coils, B B, are turned outward, as clearly represented iu Fig. l, and formed each with a single eye, loop, or coil', C, located in a central line between the two springs, but outside the latter, and in about the same horizontal plane as the upper coils, B, of the said springs. The central portion of the wire forms the bridge or connecting-piece D, by which the loops G of the upper coils, B, are united.
The loops or coils G,it will be observed, serve a double purpose-viz., first, to increase the elasticity, and hence the strength, durability,

and comfort, of the improved hed-spring; secondly, to form a larger bearing-surface for the mattress than is usual, even in this class of springs, and thus prevent the mattress from settling between the springs, to the discom- 'fortand annoyance of the occupant ofthe bed.
The lower coil of each of the springs A is formed with a hook, E, by which it :may be adjusted upon the proper bed-slat. The inner ends or points of said hooks are doubled in a horizontal plane, as shown at F, Fig. 3, and turned slightly downward, as at Gr, thus forming a beveled Iand smooth end or point upon the hook, which may therefore be' easily adjusted upon theV slat, while at the same time and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States.- i
The springs A A, having their lower coils provided with inturned hooks E. the ends of which are doubled in a horizontal plane, and turned slightly downward to form the points I, and smooth beveled ends, substantially as I and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES HENRY MOGREERY.
