HOLDER FOR TOOLS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,923, dated November 10, 1896. Application filed October 30, 1895. Serial No. 567,338. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that LCHARLES E. GOODSPEED, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Tools, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention has relation to the construction of holders for implements of various kinds, such as surgical instruments, the tools which are ordinarily carried on a bicycle, or other like articles which require to be carried about and should be packed neatly in small compass and at the same time be always readily accessible.

The object of the invention is to produce an improved construction for this general purpose which shall be as compact and neat in appearance as others of the kind now generally employed, shall hold the tools, instruments, or other articles in a manner to prevent rattling, and shall permit the withdrawal of any desired tool or other article without necessitating the removal of the entire contents of the holder.

The improved holder comprises in general an envelop or casin g having a door or opening in its side and a receiver rotatably secured or mounted within the envelop or casing and having recesses or compartments adapted to receive the tools or other articles and to be brought one at a time into registration with the opening in the casing or envelop by rotation of the receiver to permit the insertion or withdrawal of any desired tool or article.

The improved holder will be more fully de scribed hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the improved holder is represented as adapted for use as a tool-holder. for bicyclists, and in which.-

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved holder closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same, the door which closes the opening in the envelop or casing being represented by dotted lines in its open position. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 y of Fig. 1.

In its approved form the holder comprises a casing or envelop A and a receiver B,which is rotatably secured Within the envelop or casing A. The envelop or casing A may be made of any suitable material and may be of any suitable shape or size. I prefer, for the particular use above referred to, to make the envelop or casing of leather in the form of a cylinder with one end closed, as at a, while the other end is open. In the side of the casing or envelop is formed an opening, (indicated by the line 0d,) which is of suitable size and shape to permit the introduction therethrough of the various tools to be carried in the holder. The opening a will ordinarily close by a door a whichis preferably hinged along one side; as represented, the door a is of the same material as the envelop itself, and, being of leather, may be formed in one piece therewith and may be scored along one side, as at a topermit the door to be opened readily without stretching or distorting the body of the envelop or casing A. Fastening devices may also be provided for the door a, and maybe of any suitable character. I have represented the door as supplied with straps a which are made fast by means of the ordinary stud fastening devices, (represented at a The envelop or casing A is alsopreferably provided with devices by which it may be secured in position, such as the bucklestraps shown at O.

\Vithin the envelop or casing A and adapted to be rotated therein is placed a receiver B, which is adapted to receive the tools or instruments singly. It may also be made of any suitable material, but I have found it desirable to employ a cylinder of wood in which are formed the recesses or compartments Z), each recess or compartment being open toward the periphery of the cylinder and being adapted to receive the tool or other article for which it is intended. -As the receiver B does not require to be Withdrawn from the envelop or casing A, but only to be rotated therein to bring one or another of the recesses or compartments 1) into registration with the opening a in the envelop or casing A, I find it most convenient to retain the receiver in place by means of a screw D or other similar device, which is passed through the center of the closed end or-head a of the envelop or casing A and engages the receiver, a washer d being preferably interposed between the head of the screw or other device and the head or end 65 of the envelop or casing A. In order that the receiver may be rotated conveniently, it is preferably eX- tended beyond the envelop or casing A at its open end, so that it may be readily grasped by the hand. It may be covered with a cap A, of the same material as the casing or envelop A. The recesses or compartments 1) may also be lined in whole or in part, if desired, with felt or other suitable meterial, as indicated at b.

The mode of use of the improved holder will be readily apparent from the foregoing description and need not be further explained herein. It will also be obvious that the holder is adapted for many other uses than the particular use which for purposes of illustration has been referred to herein, and that my invention is not to be limited by any reference herein to any particular use. Furthermore, it is not to be limited to the particular material or materials herein referred to, nor to the shape, sizes, or relative disposition of the parts herein shown.

I claim as my invention- 1. A holder for tools, &c., comprising a cylindrical casing or envelop having one end closed and its other end open and having in its side an opening, and a cylindrical receiver rotatably secured and fitting in said envelop or casin g and projecting beyond the open end thereof and having recesses or compartments adapted to receive the tools, &c., and to be brought by rotation of the receiver into registration with said opening, substantially as shown and described.

2. A holder for tools, &c., comprising a cylindrical casing or envelop having one end closed and its other end open and having in its side an opening, a cylindrical receiver rotatable in said envelop or casing and pro- 3' ectin g beyond the open end thereof and having recesses or compartments adapted to receive the tools, &c., and to be brought by rotation of the receiver into registration With said opening, and a retaining device passed through the center of the closed end of the envelop or casing and engaging the receiver, substantially as shown and described.

3. A holder for tools, &c., comprising a cylindridal casing or envelop having one end closed and the other end open and having in its side an opening, a door to close said opening and fastening devices for said door, a cylindrical receiver rotatably secured and fitting in said envelop or casing and having recesses or compartments adapted to receive the tools, &c., and to be brought by rotation into registration with said opening, and straps attached to the closed end and side of said envelop or casing by which the holder may be secured in desired position, substantially as shown and described.
