UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE...
GUSTAVE DIETERICH, OF NElVYORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SIGISMUND B. XVORTMANN, OF SAME PLACE.
ARTISTS KIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,155, dated August 25, 1891.
Application filed April 17, 1891. Serial No. 389,283. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE DIETERICH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of NGW'X OI'k and State of New York, have invented certain new-and usefullmprovements in Artists Kits, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in artists kits; and it consists in a novel construction in which the tools and other materials of the artist may be conveniently carried and which when desired may be transformed into a suitable drawing or sketching board or table without impairing its capacity for still holding the artists materials.
The particular nature of the invention will be more fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in
whichthe kit, said body being preferably rectangular in form and adapted to receive the tools and materials of the artist, particularly those necessary for sketching. The body or receptacle A is provided with the lid B, secured thereto by means of the hinges b, and said lid B has secured to it, by means of the hinges b", the lid B, said lids corresponding in outline with each other and being adapted to be folded upon the body A and there secured by means of the hooks a and pins 1), the latter being applied to thelid B,wh1le the hooks are pivotally secured to the front of the body or receptacle A. \Vhen thelids B and B are secured upon the body A, the contents of the receptacle will be securely inclosed, and may be conveniently carried by means of the bandle E. The hinges b and b are arranged to permit the opening of the lids B B together or the lid 13 alone, leaving the lid-B upon the receptacle A, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Then the lid 13 is opened, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the surface of the lid B and that of thelidB constitute a drawing or sketching board, and this board may be given an inclined position, if desired, by means of the hinged prop D, secured to the lower rear edge of the receptacle A, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The prop D, when not in use, may be folded beneath the receptacle A, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The lid .8 is provided with the brace 0, secured thereto by means of the hinges c, and which, when the lid B is opened, as shown in Fig. 3, may be turned downward, so that its vertical edge will abut against the rear surface of the receptacle A and sustain the lid B rigidly in position. The brace C may be turned downward upon the lid B when the latter is closed, asillustrated in Fig. 2, and said brace when in use materially strengthens the structure and prevents any undue strain coming upon the hinges b".
It will thus be observed that the kit may be utilized not only to carry the artists materials within its body A, but serves as a drawing or sketching board, while at the same time a portion of the board operates as a cover for the receptacle A.
The parts of the kit arecompact and durable and capable of withstanding considerable usage.
It is thought that the invention will be particularly useful to artists when sketching, since it may with great convenience be used for carrying the tools and other materials necessary for the purpose and at the same time furnish a support or sketching-board which may be inclined, if desired. The surfaces of the lids B B will not be obstructed by the hinges b, and hence will constitute a continuous smooth board.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. The artists kit consisting of the body A, forming a receptacle, and the lids B B, corresponding in outline with each other and both hinged at one edge of said body A, said lids forming a cover for said receptacle, and the lid B being adapted to be opened and form with the lid B a smooth drawing-board, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The artists kit consisting of the body A, forming a receptacle, the lids B B, corresponding in outline with each other and both hinged at one edge of said body A, and the hinged brace O, the lids B B forming a cover for said receptacle, and the lid B being adapted to be opened and ,form with the lid B a smooth drawing-board, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The artists kit consisting of the body A, forming a receptacle, the lids B B, corresponding in outline with each other and both hinged at one edge of said receptacle, and the prop D, hinged to the lower rear edge of said body, the lids B B forming a cover for said receptacle, and the lid B being adapted to be opened and form with the lid B a smooth drawing-board, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The artists kit consisting of the body A, forming a receptacle, and the lids B B, corresponding in outline with each other, the lid B being hinged at one edge to said body and the lid B being hinged to the lid 13, and said lids forming a cover for the said receptacle, and the lid B being adapted to be opened and form with the lid B a smooth drawingboard, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New 30 York and State of New York, this 16th day of April, AD. 1891.
