WINFIELD R. COE, OF WEST MEBIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
iMPRov-EDMETHOD oF sPREADlNG MAsTlc RooFlNG.
i Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,09] dated August 14, 1866.
To a/ZZ whom 'it mayconcem: T
`Be it known that I, WINEIELD B. 00E, ot' West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Spreading Mastic` Roofing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which `will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whicht,
Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section of my `improved apparatus taken through the line aux, Fig. 2. \Fig. 2 is a rear-end view of the `same, part of the spreading-board being broken `away to show the arrangement of the parts.
Similar parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved apparatus for spreading roong-cement upon roofs evenly,.quiclrly, and conveniently 5 and it consists in the combination of the guiding and `pressure roller, the box or hopper, and the adjustable spreading-board, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the box or hopper which contains the prepared roofing. The rear end, a', of the box A-does not extend quite to the. bottom a2 of said box, leaving a space or opening for the` escape of the roong. This opening is closed by a sliding gate, awhich works up and down in grooved cleats a4, attached to the rear end of the box A, as shown in the drawings, so that the owof the roofing may be regulated at pleasure.
If desired, a lever may be connected to the gate a3, and may extend forward, so that the said gate may be operated from the front of letters of reference indicate like I the box A. B is a roller, which is pivoted to the arms C, projecting from the front side of the box A.
The roller B is grooved around its central part to `receive the triangular strip of wood which is usually placed over the overlapped edges of the felting, as hereinafter described.
To the sides of the box A, near its rear end, are attached two runners, D and E, the forward ends of which `are roundedoff, so that they may slide easilyY along the roof. These runners project in the rea-r of the box A, as shown in Fig. 1, and are grooved vertically on their inner sides, near their ends, for the reception of the adjustable spreading-board F.
The board F is notched at the middle part of its lower edge for the reception of the triangular wooded strip usually applied to the overlapping edges of the'felting, and it is held in place by the rod G and thumb-nut H, which draw the ends of the runners D and E toward each other, holding the said board F securely at any point to which it may be raised. This arrangement enables the apparatus to spread a layer of any desired thickness overthe felting.
In using the apparatus the strips of felting are applied to the roof in the ordinary manner, with their edges overlapping each other and with a small triangular strip of wood I placed overthe seam. The Inachine is then drawn along the seam, so that the said strip of wood` may enter the notch in the roller BV and in the spreading-board F. The gate a and the board F being so adjusted lthat the coating of cement may be of the desired thick ness, a strip of felting wide enough to cover the seam is then applied, and another coat of cement applied in the manner before described. For this purpose I generally use two machines, one, a few inches wide, to coat the the seam with the first coating, and the other so wide that the layer spread by it will extend a little past the middle of the adjacent strips of felting, so that when the apparatus has 'been drawn along each seam the whole roof may be covered with a layer of cement.
It may sometimes be advisable, and especially in this case with reference to the apparatus when made wide, to place another roller directly beneath the bottom a'z of the hopper, so that the parts that form the seam Inay be closely pressed together before the cement is applied and the apparatus be supported by and car` ried upon these two rollers.
The apparatus may be moved by arms or handles attached to the sides of the box or hopper A in the usual manner.
I claim as new and desire to secure ters Patent I The combination of the guiding and pressure roller B, the box or hopper A, and the adjustable spreading-board `F with each other, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
