UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. ARMSTRONG, OF JOSHUA, TEXAS.
COTTON-PICKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,444, dated November 3, 18976. Application filed May 18, 1896. Serial No. 592,017. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concer-7e:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joshua, 4in the county of Johnson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and use-` ful Improvements in Cotton Picking Machinery; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact `description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to attachments for use in carrying the cotton while it is being picked in the field by the laborers; and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient device of this class to be used by the hand in the field while harvesting the cotton; and to this end theI novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. H y
In the accompanying drawings the same letters of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the manner of using my improved cotton-picking sack. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the sack and truck. Fig. 3 is aview of the truck, and Fig. 11 is a bottom plan view of the sack detached from the truck.
5 represents the sack, and 6 the truck, and it is formed with a convex bottom consisting of a series of light slats 7, secured midway to the axle 8 and bowed upwardly at each end, where they are secured to a cross-brace 9.
The axle 8 is provided with light broadtired wheels 1G, and the truck proper is so balanced. upon the axle that it forms a double-ender and canI be manipulated with convenience and facility in" either. direction.
The sack 5 is provided with an open mouth 17 and a broad flexible strap-loop 18, adap'ted to be placed over the right shoulder, diagonally across the' breast, and under the left arm. This `brings the mouth 17 within convenient reach of the right hand, and it can be readily held open by the left when the operator is engaged in picking.
19 represents the straps secured to the sack,
f and in the looped end 2l of each is secured a snap-hook 22, one of which engages with each of the square links 'l5 on the four corners of the truck and by means of which the sack is detachably secured to the truck.
When in use, the operator, being in the po- 'sition shown in Fig. 1, walks from plant to plant, drawing the sack and its attached truck after him, the weight of the cotton in the sack resting entirely on the truck and leaving both hands of the operator free to pick the ripe cotton.
'The truck itself will be fcundvery useful for other purposes about the plantation, as it can be loaded with bales and the like`,'which can be secured thereto by passing ropes through the links 15, and the whole hauled from place to place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire t0 sccure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
A double-ended truck comprising the convex body 6, consisting of a series of `slats 7 secured midway to the axle 8 and bowed upwardly at each end, a cross-brace 9 connecting the converging ends of said slots, and having integral right-angular extensions 13 having strap-eyes 14, a square link 15 hinged to said eyes, in combination with the sack having an open mouth and a shoulder-strap and having its body portion provided with a series of straps 19 in which are secured the snap-hooks 22, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY T. ARMSTRONG.
'Witnessesz E. C. KEMP, W. L. WEST.
