N. J. ST. HILAIRE. DEVICE FOR SHARPENING sols'sons.
'No. 579,726. Patented Mar. 30,1897,
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
U ITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
NAPOLEON J. ST. HILAIRE, OF GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS.
DEVICE FOR SHARPENING SCISSORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,726, dated March 30, 1897.
Application filed April 25, 1896.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON J. Sr. HIL- AIRE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Sharpening Scissors, Shears, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to devices for sharpening scissors, shears, and similar articles; and the object thereof is to provide an effective device of this class which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive and which is also adapted to be secured to a wall or other support.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device for sharpening scissors and similar articles; Fig. 2, a similar view with one side of the block which forms a part thereof removed; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention I provide a block A, which is provided at one end with outwardly-directed shoulders or projections a, by which the device may be secured to a wall or other support, and said block is provided near its upper side with a transverse slot a which extends only part way across the same, and with a vertical slot or passage a which is triangular in form, the wider end thereof being directed downwardly, and the lower portion of said block is also cut out, so as to form a shoulder of and an inclined wall a at the inner side thereof. The block A is also provided with a vertical groove or slot B,
. which opens through the shoulder a and Serial No. 589,016. (No model.)
is a bar G, which is triangular in cross-section and which is provided with cutting edges, said bar being composed of hard steel or similar material, and passing through the outer portion of the block A is a set-screw or bolt H, which is screw-threaded and which is provided at its inner end with a notch or recess h, which is adapted to press upon one of the edges of the bar G, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The block A is provided with a transverse slot or groove K, through which said screw or bolt H passes, and vformed in said slot or groove K is a partition 70, which is provided with a screw-threaded opening through which the said set-screw or bolt passes; but this feature is immaterial, and said set-screw or bolt may be passed directly through the outer portion of the block, as will be readily understood. I also provide a removable side plate or cover L, in which is formed a slot L which corresponds with the slot a in the block, and the operation .will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be understood that the position of the bar G may be adjusted to some extent by means of the block 0 and the bolt D, which passes therethrough, and said bar is designed to be held at an inclination, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the object of the set-screw or bolt H is to hold said bar centrally in the triangular slot a and in operation the blade of the scissors or shears is passed. through the slots a and L and drawn back and forth in said slot, the edge thereof being pressed upon the bar G, as will be readily understood, and in this operation the blade of the scissors or shears is sharpened by said bar G.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be understood that the blockA in the construction of the devicemay be cast in a single piece, and any desired metal or material may be employed for this purpose.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein-described device for sharpening scissors, shears and similar articles, which consists of a block or casing in which is formed a vertical slot or passage, in which is mounted a bar, said bar being adapted to serve as a sharpener, and said block or casing being provided with a transverse slot or slots through which the blade to be sharpened is passed, and means for holding said bar in position, consisting of a movable block which is mounted in a suitable opening in the bottom of the main block or casing, and through which passes a bolt or screw, the outer end of said block being projected into said vertical slot or opening, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described device for sharpening scissors, shears, and similar articles, which consists of a block or casing in which is formed a vertical slot or passage, in which is mounted a bar, said bar being adapted to serve as a sharpener, and said block or casing being provided with a transverse slot or slots through which the blade to be sharpened is passed, and means for holding said bar in position, consisting of a movable block which is mounted in a suitable opening in the bottom of the main block or casing, and through which passes a bolt or screw, the outer end of said block being projected into said vertical slot or opening, and said movable block being provided with inclined ends, one of which is adapted to operate in connection with a similar surface or wall, formed in the main block or casing, and the other being adapted to serve as a support for the bar, substantially as shown and described.
3. The herein-described device for sharpening scissors, shears and similar articles which consists of a block or casing in which is formed a vertical slot or passage, in which is mounted a bar, said bar being adapted to serve as a sharpener, and said block or casing being provided with a transverse slot or slots through which the blade to be sharpened is passed, and means for holding said bar in position, consisting of a movable block which is mounted in a suitable opening in the bottom of the main block or casing, and through which passes a bolt or screw, the outer end of said block being projected into said vertical slot or opening, and said movable block being provided with inclined ends, one of which is adapted to operate in connection with a similar surface or wall, formed in the main block or casin g, and the otherbeing adapted to serve as a support for the bar, and said main block or casing being also provided with a set-screw or bolt which passes therethrough, and which is provided with a notch or recess in its inner end, which is also adapted to hold said bar in position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 21st day of April, 1896.
