Description

E. J. WATSON 8:. P. ARMSTRONG. Animal ShearingMachine.
No. 205,450. Patented June 25,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
V EDWARD J. WATSON, OF GREENBUSH, NEW YORK, AND FRANK ARMSTRONG,
OF BRIDGEPOR'I, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN ANIMAL-SHEARING MACHINES.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,450, dated June 25, 1878; application filed April 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD J. \VATSON, of Greenbush, in the'county of Rensselaer and State of New York, and FRANK ARMSTRONG, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal- Shearing Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, making a part of this speci fication.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in animal-shearing devices for which Letters Patent were granted to E. J. Watson, November 27, 1877, No. 197,7 04.
It has for its object to provide a means for regulating the depth of cut; and consists in combining with the shearing-blades a secondary comb or its equivalent, which, While it does not cover the hair of the animal, holds the cuttingblades any given distance from the hide, and hence produces the results aimed at.
As this invention, as before stated, relates to improvements on the Letters Patent above mentioned, in the drawings we have not illustrated in detail the means for operating the knives, as that is immaterial.
Figure 1 is a side view of a shearing device embracing our improvements, and Fig. 2 is a front or top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the two figures.
A is the handle, secured to the lower end of the back plate B, which is provided at its upper end with the usual fixed cutter O. D is a vibrating plate or arm, pivoted at a to the plate B, and operated by suitable mechanism, through the medium of a crank-arm, E. To the top of the vibrating plate D is secured another cutter, F, which lies against the cutter O, and when vibrated clips the hair protrudin g through said cutter. Gr is an ordinary comb, made of hard rubber or other suitable material, removably attached to a metal frame, H, which is provided at each end with cars 11. This frame is secured to the back plate B by thum b-screws c, in such manner that the frame may vibrate upon the same, to cause the comb G to approach or recede from the back plane of the cutter O. I is a set-screw passing through a curved slot, 61, in the plane D, and having its bearing in the back plate B at a point above the pivotal points 0 of the combframe, and of such length as to reach the frame H in its extreme positions.
From this construction it will be seen that the comb G may be adjusted to any distance from the back cutter O, and the set-screw I caused to rest against the inside of the frame H, so that it cannot by pressure be forced nearer the cutter than desired.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the cutting mechanism of a shearing-machine, a hinged comb adapted to be adjusted at diEerent distances from the cutting mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a shearing device and a secondary adjustable comb or its equivalent, and frame H b, the set-screw I, for holding and adjusting the comb, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 9th day of April, A.
