CLOTHES-POUNDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,161, dated January 12, 1897.
Application filed December 27, 1895. Serial No. 578,435. (No model.)
To all whom, it Hui/y concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. MARKWIEsE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olothes- Pounders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple, economical, and eflicient clothespounder; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1.. represents a section of a clothes-pounder constructed accordin g to my invention, the section being taken on line 1 1 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, this view being indicated by dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a conical sheet-metal shell open at its lower end and provided adjacent to this end with apertures b at suitable intervals for the escape of air when the clothes-pounder, of which it forms a part, is operated. In watertight union with the upper edge of the shell A to depend therein is a funnel B, also provided with air-escape apertures 0, adjacent to its lower end.
Avertical socket O is provided with lateral wings D, that are made fast to the interior of the funnel B, and a handle E engages the socket.
The pounder above described is worked up and down against a mass of clothes in a tub or other suitable vessel that also contains suds, and the latter are thereby caused to circulate through said clothes for the purpose of cleans- 1 ing the same, the air accumulating within said pounder escaping through the aforesaid apertures in order that said pounder may be forced down into said suds. The lift of the pounder causes a suction that prevents the clothes from packing, and thus the circulation of the suds is insured.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the conical shell A provided with the apertures 17, the funnel B in Water-tight union with the upper edge of said shell to depend therein and provided with the lower end apertures c, the socket 0 provided with lateral wings D made fast to the interior of said funnel, and the handle E engaging the socket.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN G. MARKWIESE.
