To all w 7mm it may con-Germ Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Fonsrnn Fnasnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the village of Port Robinson, in the county of Welland, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Washing Machines, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines and more particularly to plunger rings used with the vacuum type, and the object of the invention is to devise an improved plunger ring provided with a vacuum chamber at its lower end which will quickly and eificiently do the work, while effecting a considerable economy in power.
A further object is to devise a plunger ring which will be so effective in operation as to do away with the necessity of soaking the clothes overnight prior to introduction into the machine.
My invention consists of a plunger ring constructed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

My plunger ring is constructed of superimposed spaced apart upper, intermediate and lower rings 1, 2 and 3 respectively, adapted to be held in position relatively to one another by the vertically disposed straps l.
5 is an inwardly inclined upper flange formed at the top of the upper ring portion 1, the angle of inclination of the flange being substantially forty-five degrees, and such flange being provided for the purpose of preventing the water in the tub splashing over the top of the plunger ring.
The ring portions are provided with rolled over edges, and the lower ring portion 3 is provided with an inverted U-shapcd annular conduit 6 disposed inwardly of the wall of the ring portion which is concentric with the walls of the remaining ring ortions 1 and 2. The inner wall of the con uit 6 is turned Serial No. 593,056.

8 is a bridge-piece extending across the top of the ring portion 1 and preferably se cured to the flange 5 thereof, said bridgepiece having the vertical hole 9 adapted to receive the plunger operating rod 10 which extends downwardly therethrough.
On the up stroke of the plunger ring a vacuum is created in the conduit 6 and on the downward stroke the water rushing in, fills the conduit 6, causing the expulsion of the air therefrom out through the water and up through the clothes disposed in the centre of the plunger ring, the inwardly extending flange 7 forcing the water inwardly so that it will be driven up with more force on the downward stroke of the plunger ring and thus create more effective agitation.
An outwardly extending horizontal flange 11 is provided at the lower end of the outer wall of the ring portion 3 which prevents the lower edge of such wall cutting its way through the water without resistance, thus aiding in the effective agitation thereof.
From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a simple and effective plunger ring of improved design which can be readily manufactured and which will be exceedingly efficient in use.
What I claim as my invention is.
1. In a washing machine, a plunger ring having a peripheral conduit formed at the lower end thereof of substantially U-shaped cross section, the outer wall of the conduit coinciding with the ring proper, the lower edge of the outer wall of the conduit turned outwardly to form a substantially horizontal flange, and the lower edge of the inner wall of the conduit turn-ed inwardly to form a substantially horizontal flange, and the upper edge of the ring inclined inwardly.
2. In a washing machine, an agitator ring of the walled type comprising a plurality of spaced apart superimposed concentric annular wall sections, each open at top and bottom, means for holding the wall sections in their spaced apart position, and an inwardly extending annular conduit formed in the of the Walled type comprising a. plurality of spaced apart superimposed concentric annular Wall sections, each open at top and bottom, means for holding the wall sections in their spaced apart position, and an inwardly extending annular conduit formed in the lower Wall section constituting a vacuum chamber, the lower edge of the outer, Wall of the conduit turned outwardly to form a substantially horizontal flange and the lower 1 edge of the inner Wall of the conduit turned inwardly to form a substantially horizontal flange and the upper edge of the upper Wall section inclined lnwardly.
