ROPE CLAMP.
No, 563,676, Patented July 7, 1896.

UNITED STATES DAVID ZELDON 'MCGINNISL CLAUD OYRUS ROVLEY, AND JOHN SHERMAN BEAN, OF NORTH HOPE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO lV. E. GAMBLE,
OF EMLENTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROPE-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 563,676, dated July '7, 1896. Application filed April 24, 1895. Renewed February 24, 1896. Serial No. 580,539. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we,DAvID ZELDON MG- GINNIS, CLAUD Grens Rownnr, and JonN SHERMAN Beemctizens of the United States,
residing at North Hope, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Ropes or Ha-Wsers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
1o exact description of the invention, such as will en@ ble others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked i5 thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clamps for ropes and hawsers; and it has for its object the provizo sion of a simple device of the character named which may be quickly and easily applied to the end of a rope or hawser, and will serve to cffeetually hold the strands of the rope in place, and at the same time will afford a convenient loop or clevis whereby the end of the rope or hawser maybe attached as desired.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts,
all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then speciiically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the 3 5 accompanying drawings, whieh, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the end of a rope with our clamp applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section upon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamping mechanism with the parts separated to receive the rope.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the ring or collar which we employ in connection with the clamping-jaws. This collaris contracted at one of its ends,as shown, the diameter of the opening at the smaller end being such as to 5o permit the collar to be passed freely over the rope or hawser upon which it is to be used. The collar A is screw-threaded internally to receive the external threads of the clampingjaws B B. The jaws B are each semispherical in crosssection, the upper or outer end 55 portion B being cylindrical, while its opposite end is beveled to conform to the shape of the collar A and is screw-threaded to engage the threads of the collar.
The clamping-jaws B are each provided at 6e their outer ends with the ears I) ZJ, between which are j ournaled the iiattened ends of the elevis O.
rlhe operation of the clamp is simple and from the foregoing description will be at once 6 5 understood.
The collar A is passed over the end of the rope or hawser, with the larger end of the collar in the direction of the end of the rope. The extreme end of the rope, which is pref- 7o erably knotted or enlarged, as shown, is extended slightly beyond the collar and is received within the enlarged spherical or cylindrical portion B of the clamping-jaws. The jaws are then compressed over the end of the rope and the screw-threaded ends of the jaws are inserted within the larger end of the collar, when, by turning the jaws, the same a-re drawn securely within the collar, thus securely clamping the rope in place. 8o
Having thus described our invention, what we claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture a hawser-clamp having in combination, the hollow clamp-jaws B, B, with tapering screwthreaded surfaces as described, the ilattened ears b, the U-shaped member O having its ends pivoted between the ears 1;,11, on each jaw, and the screw r-eap A, substantially as 9o shown and described.
In testimony whereof we aiiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.

XVM. E. A. FIPHER.
