NORMAN ISAOHSON, OF MARION, IDAHO.
SWIVEL CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,122, dated November 14, 1899. Application filed March 17,1899. Serial No. 769,531. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NORMAN ISACHSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ma rion, Cassia county, Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel Connections, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to swivel connections for securing the ends of ropes, cables, or the like, so that the rope or cable may always untwist itself and will not be chafed by rubbing against any part of the device.
To this end the inventiouincludes ahollow thimble, adapted to receive the end of the rope or the like, and a clevis in which said thimble is seated and may turn, the clevis having a pivotal connection with its supporting member.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a partial sectional View of one form of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of a modification.
The clevis 1 herein shown has 'its arms pivotally connected to a band 2, by which it is secured to its supporting member. Through the base 3 of the clevis, which is flat upon its upper and lower faces and widened intermediately, an opening 4 extends, which receives the shank 5 of the hollow thimble, the enlarged head 7 of which is seated on the upper face of the clevis-base. This head is enlarged to provide a flange overhanging the shank thereof to rest on the clevis-base and also to provide a seat within the head for the knotted end of the cable or rope, the cable being secured to the thimble by passing the same therethrough from below and knotting the end thereof above the thimble, which will prevent its withdrawal through the shank.
To prevent the accidental displacement of the thimble, a lug 8 extends radially therefrom, which is brought into alinement with the radial slot 9 in the base of the clevis when inserting the thimble therein and which is brought to bear on the under face of the clevisbase by giving the thimble a turn after its insertion or by interposing a split ring 10 between the face of said lug or lugs, a plurality of lugs being used in this latter case, and the clevis-base.
In Fig. 3 a construction is illustrated in which ball-bearings are interposed between the flange of the thimble-head and the upper face of the base. The shank of the thimble is in this case threaded, and a nut 11 screwed thereon bears against the under face of the clevis-baseand retains the thimble against displacement and with the bearing properly adjusted.
I claim 1. In combination, the clevis, the band piv otally connected to the arms thereof and a hollow thimble having free turning movement with means for retaining the same in the clevis and a rope or cable held by said thimble, substantially as described.
2. In combination, the clevis having an opening through the base .thereof, a thimble extending through said opening having the head thereof seated on the face of said base with means for retaining the same thereon, said thimble having free turning movement and a rope held by said thimble, substantially as described.
3. In combination, a clevis or loop having an opening through the base thereof, a hollow thimble extending through said opening having a shoulder or flange seated upon the inner face of the base to retain said thimble in position said thimble having free turning movement and .a cable or rope extending through the thimble and held therein, substantially as described.
4.. In combination, the clevis or loop hav ing an opening through the base thereof, a thimble having an enlarged part seated on said base and a shank extending through said opening, said thimble having free turning movement and a cable or the like extending through the thimble having its end knotted to prevent its withdrawal through the thim= ble, substantially as described.
5. In combination, a clevis or loop having an opening through the base thereof, a thim ble having an enlarged portion seated on said base and a shank extending through said open= ing, ball-bearings interposed between the thimble and the base, a nut threaded on said shank adapted to abut the base to retain said thimble in place and a cable or rope adapted to pass through said thimble and be held having an enlarged head and a shank extending through said opening and means adapted to find a bearing against the lower face of the clevis-base for retaining the thimble in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NORMAN ISAOHSON.
an opening through the base thereof, a thinnble having an enlarged portion seated on said base, and a shank extending through said opening, a nut threaded on said shank adapted to abut the base to retain said thirnble in place and a cable or rope adapted to pass through said thimble and be held therein substantially as described.
'7. In combination, the clevis having an opening through the base thereof, a thimble 6. In combination, a clevis or loop having Witnesses:
